I'm quite suprised by some of the high weights.  This year in tournaments my average weight was just over 14lb so you might expect me to say 3 lb average as well.  However, I caught at least 20 other fish to get to this weight...meaning my average was closer to 1.9-2.1 pounds.  3.5-4 lb average smallies...so you guys are catching as many 6lbers as 2s?  That's impressive.  I know Dwight has some incredible pictures to proove otherwise but I would think enough 2-2.5lb fish would be mixed in to bring the average down.

I'm with Francho on this one.  It really depends on where I am fishing.  If I fish my favorite lake, which is almost everytime I go out, its much higher than any of the other lakes around here.  It's a private lake, less than 50 acres with a very nice trophy bass population and the average weight of fish I catch is between 3 and 4 lbs.  I know there are 10lb+ fish in there, I have seen pictures of them, just wish they would bite my line...

Wow, some of you guys are just absolutely killing it!  You're averages are equal to averages weighed in at tournaments...and that's impressive!  I wish I could say I average 3lbs per fish, heck, even 1.5 would be nice, but I would guess my actual average per fish caught is probably less than a pound on most days.  Generally, I end up catching a good few bass that have to hit the golden rule to proove they are keepers lol, then a few nice fish on a good day.  Once in a while I will catch something special that makes it all worth while.

Course, I am generally fishing Claytor Lake which isn't exactly a big bass factory like some of the lakes out there.

I know it sounds like BS but its all about the fishery. I usually do not catch many dinks when smallie fishing on Erie. I try to target areas that give me the best shot at bigger fish. I do not fish for numbers in areas that are known to produce numbers. I have caught more small fish this year than normal & less bigger fish.

I don't specialize on Erie like Dwight, but I gotta say, the fish are bigger than usual, and you can very quickly eliminate dink fests there.  It's not like Lake Ontario, where you might run into a pack of small fish one day, and the same spot has bigger fish.  The big fish are in big fish places.  How you get to those places?  Time on the water, and experience.  I had help in the beginning (thanks, "No Good"), from an experienced angler.  While it wasn't really picking up spots (there was a little of that), it was learning how to dissect a spot, and recognizing the micro structures within huge structural elements that was holding bigger fish.  I wish I could do that better on other waters.

Clearly Dwight's impressive results speak for themselves.

And as soon as this Rain & Wind subsides - I'll be making a B~Line directly to your location hoping to assist you in your efforts to Improve that average.

If I graphed and bell curved them out, I'd guess you'd see a large majority of the middle curve in that 12"-16" range for me - but I fish for numbers and not size, and there aren't many waters in Indiana with any type of a "big bass" reputation. You can't catch what ain't there :)

Thank you very much for the invite J - but I'm afraid I'm not familiar with the "wander ditch" term.

You have peaked my interest however . . . .

For me I don't fish a lot of smaller lures I guess compared to probably a lot of people. Even when fishing what I consider my smaller stuff I am still trying to target bigger ones as much as possible. Seldom do I just fish to catch as many as I can any more. The only time that really peaks my interest is if I have not fished in a while like after winter or something. then I want to just catch them all and get back in the grove. I also throw a lot of things that I guess are baits that generally get bigger fish like chatter baits, jigs, bigger creature baits, swimbaits, ect. I rarely throw things like little grubs or small poppers or whatever any more. I don't even think I have thrown a dropshot this year more then like 3 times and that is the #1 fish catching machine for me. I can have a field day once I get on some fish with a dropshot it's just that good for me.

Firstly, not big enough is my gut answer. Since I'm just outside Boston, MA and work two jobs, by time fishing is limited. One pound or so is the average, once in a while I'll catch one over two.

Local Ponds - 1.5 pounds.

Double Secret Pond -  3+ poundswith a five or six pounder mixed in.

Lakes - 2.5 to 3 pounds.

Rivers - 1.5 to 3 pounds but mostly in the 2 pound range.

If you added the weight of the top 5 bass you caught and divided by 5 this would be your high average weight. Any 5 bass limit over 15 lbs., or 3 lb average wins money in most bass tournaments.
