tater555 Posted October 12, 2014 Posted October 12, 2014 Alright guys, I just bought a tdz 103h, a daiwa capricorn 2000a spinning reel, a daiwa minispin, and an unknown model okuma spinning reel for $55 on ebay. I can't wait to get my hands on that tdz! I have been fishing nothing but lews since I started messing with baitcasters, but recently have really wanted to get into super tuning and customizing daiwas. I'm gonna be starting out with the carbontex drag and Boca bearings, and some polishing. Does anyone have any experiences with the daiwa capricorn spinning reel or the tdz 103h? Quote
Cgrinder Posted October 12, 2014 Posted October 12, 2014 I have some experience with tuning and modifying Daiwa casting reels. Prepare to surrender your wallet. Reel modding gets expensive quickly if you're not careful. Quote
Super User Raul Posted October 12, 2014 Super User Posted October 12, 2014 The moment you fish for the first time with the TDZ you'll imediately will feel those Lews are trash, if I were you I would send that TDZ to DVT for a professional cleaning, lubing and Carbontex drag pads upgrade. Check out the SV spools for that TDZ. Quote
tater555 Posted October 12, 2014 Author Posted October 12, 2014 Already been looking at the sv spools! And I surrendered my wallet when I got serious about bassin! How much would DVT charge me for clean, lube, and carbontex? Would they polish the metal drag washers too? I'm capable of doing it myself, as I have achieved over 20 second freespool times with all my lews in Stock form, but the tdz looks quite a bit more complicated than my tourney pro haha Quote
tater555 Posted October 12, 2014 Author Posted October 12, 2014 Edit*** 20 sec free spool on my lews after THOROUGH cleaning and lubing Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted October 12, 2014 Super User Posted October 12, 2014 Mike gives a 10% discount to BR members...just include your user name in your correspondence with him. He would able to get you an appropriate quote just mention what you want done. Professional clean, part inspection, and reassemble, plus say supertuning, carbontex drag, and upgraded bearings. Am I reading your post correctly...you bought all those reels for $55? The TDZ series was the predecessor to the Steeze. Very nice reels. Quote
tater555 Posted October 12, 2014 Author Posted October 12, 2014 Yes sir you are reading the post correctly, $55 for all four reels on ebay!! I don't think anyone realized there was a tdz mixed in with the 3 spinning reels. The title of the add was "4 fine diawa and okuma fishing reels" I swear I laughed out loud when the auction ended for $42.51 + 10.80 shipping. I could not believe no one else noticed it. And the tdz actually looks really good, no boat rash or anything that I could see, just missing the handle nut cover Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted October 13, 2014 Super User Posted October 13, 2014 Wow. That is one heckava deal. Congratulations. Can't help with your supertuning. I am not one who likes to tinker, but absolutely need to learn to clean and properly relube my own reels as I can't afford to pay for Mike's retirement when I can't afford my own. I have a few TD-Zs and a few Daiwa spinning reels, but not the Capricorn. My Daiwa Minispin hasn't been used in years. Not what I would call a reliable reel. I used 4# mono on it, but casting with it left a lot to be desired. Don't think it even works anymore. Among my TD-Zs is a 103ML that is as purchased used. Far as I know no upgrades. Very nice reel. e_bassfisher repaired my used TD-Z 105H. Had it supertuned, Carbontex drag added and bearings upgraded at the same time. No offense to Mike of DVT. Had Mike clean reels before that and he has cleaned some for me since then plus repairing, supertuning and upgrading drag and bearings on a used Curado 51E. Ian is said to be great with Daiwa reels so I gave him a whirl. He is very good......as is Mike. The 105H is now a great little reel. I use it on an older ML HMG as one of my combos for casting 1/4 oz. and less. I think I can safely guarantee you will like the 103H. 1 Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted October 13, 2014 Super User Posted October 13, 2014 Carbontex drag and a good cleaning is all it needs but a spool upgrade doesn't hurt at all if you want to spend the money on one. Bearings are an enthusiast thing and don't do much. Even Mike will tell you that they don't make a big difference. Same with free spool times. Quote

I quickly learned to be unimpressed with free spool times after testing a couple of my reels for it, then seeing how they actually cast. Bearings may not help much, but I doubt I am good enough to tell the difference. However, I have no problem upgrading bearings when I have a reel tuned on the off chance that it does improve my casting ability. This may only equate to less effort for the same distance, or slightly less braking force, but I am willing to spend the few extra bucks just in case. Kind of like people using braid for backing. tater555 Posted October 13, 2014 Author Posted October 13, 2014 Yeah I can't wait to get the reels in, it's sounding like the tdz is gonna be perfect for me. I throw alot of weightless plastics and have really been wanting a decent finesse reel. Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted October 13, 2014 Super User Posted October 13, 2014 Oh sorry to hear about buying diawa! I'm kidding.. But on bearings, yea you will notice on ceramics.. They are noisy as hell! Congrats on the great deal! Quote
IAY Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 If you don't want noisy bearings, you can get microball bearings from Japan like the ones from Hedgehog Studio etc. Quote

Get the shallow SV spool or a 105 spool, the 103 spool is not a finesse spool but a regular one, the 105 is more light line oriented ( 8 - 10 lb test ). Quote
tater555 Posted October 14, 2014 Author Posted October 14, 2014 I've been wondering about those micro ball bearings. Has anyone tried them? It actually sounds like a great concept, I just haven't heard of anyone actually using them Quote
Super User Jeff H Posted October 15, 2014 Super User Posted October 15, 2014 I was warned of this and I'm going to pass it on....you are ruined! You will like that TD-Z so much that you'll seek another. A new world will open and you'll create further reasons to buy yet another.....or 3. The "finesse" end of this is a whole lot of fun!! I spent all of my Sept weekends bangin' smallies on my finesse casters. If I wasn't ruined prior to that, I am now. Too much fun!! Quote
aprestonSEK Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 I use hedgehog studios Air BFS which are designed for throwing finesse style lures. They do a phenomenal job. Quote
GANGGREEN Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 I have a Capricorn that I purchased for half price a few years ago and it's probably my nicest spinning reel. Very nice. Quote
