Bank Fishing Anglers Beware Of.......

Where you step. I went fishing at local canal yesterday close to home. As I was walking along casting to spots along the bank, I feel this go through my shoe!!

 

 

The spike went through my shoe and slightly broke the skin between one of my toes. For a split moment I thought it went through my foot. To my relief it didn't. Some genius in their infinite wisdom designed this thing with a 4inch spike taped at the end of a broken 4 ft piece of PVC. I was upset at myself for not seeing it and more upset that someone would carelessly discard something this dangerous.  Lesson learned.

I've tripped on pvc pipes and holes close to the bank. It's kinda hard to pay attention where you step when you're trying to keep an eye out for gators and snakes.

Yup,  this is one reason I keep my tetanus shots up to date, Lou.

 

The other reason is that I sometimes put drills through my hands while working.

Yes my tetanus is up to date. Hook in my thumb followed up with a trip to the ER 2 yrs ago.

It always amazed me what you will find that can cut through the skin while fishing from the bank or wading a creek. I remember getting a tack in my shoe 45 miles from the nearest town 3 miles up a creek. You just wander how things get there and why.

I fish the bank a lot and I always wear hiking boots for the snakes and stuff like this. I also move slow from place to place, and check the area before moving. Its amazing how many snakes there are in Weston. Lou you saw one that day we fished together. Don't step where you cant see!

My freshwater is only bank fishing these days.  I don't care to fish anyplace with high grass, the county hasn't done a lot of mowing yet, it's still growing season.  It's more difficult to fish the high banked canals in Palm Beach county but I feel a lot safer being up high as compared to fishing at the edge of the water like in Broward.  Fire ants can be a problem, they can be on you fast, I've been bit hundreds of times of the years, they know how to find flesh, lol.

This is the reason I wear comfy work boots or hiking boots when I'm bank fishing.. plus the work boots are water proof.

Tetanus is very serious. Remember that whatever cut you doesn't have to be rusty to give you tetanus, that is only a myth. Rusty things are just a perfect place for the bacteria to live but ANY surface can have tetanus causing bacteria.

I fish some rocky spillways under turn of the century type dams...  They're littered with rusty pieces of machinery washed out of the old dams.  I am so overly cautious for that exact reason- glad you didn't get lanced, OP!

I stepped on an old, rusty piece of chicken wire once fishing barefoot. Went into my big toe and broke off right at my skin. ER visit and lots of numbing followed by lots of digging around and it was finally out, I wear shoes when I'm fishing now.
