CarolinaBoy4Life Posted September 26, 2014 Author Posted September 26, 2014 From the info that I've heard it appears that the reel's are different in design and look's. You can tell just by looking at the reel's that the PQ is different from the combo reel being sold. Not sure about different model # or any information such as that. Quote
cbass12 Posted September 26, 2014 Posted September 26, 2014 Don't know if I am misunderstanding this, but when someone came into our store and wanted the combo in catalog, we would have them choose the Carbonlite rod they wanted and choose which gear ratio reel they wanted. The reel came off the shelf with all the other PQ's. They weren't different or special order reels. Hootie Sorry for the confusion and causing this thread to stray off topic, but I wasn't talking about the PQ/Carbonlite combo. I love those and I have 3 of them. The PQ/PQ combo was what I was referring to. 1 Quote

Brian6428 Posted September 27, 2014 Posted September 27, 2014 While this may be a good deal, you're not getting the same reel as you would if you bought it from behind the counter. I got the combo a couple years ago at xmas time and took it back immeditately. The reel was not to the usual standards of the PQ. A few weeks ago I got to talking to an employee at BPS, and he stated that the reels they manufacture for the combo are not the same as the usual PQ and are not as good of quality. Really? Bummer. I thought my brothers new PQ (not from a combo) seemed quite a bit better than mine from the combo. Oh well, I've had it for a year and it is still doing pretty good. Still not bad for $70. Quote
Super User CWB Posted September 28, 2014 Super User Posted September 28, 2014 P.Q. I do have a extreme that is probably pushing 10 years old that my son now uses and it still works flawlessly. Almost have to try to backlash it. My brother just bought a new extreme and .i didn't like it. Felt kind of cheaply made. Quote

If you buy the combo off the rack with the reel mounted to the rod, it is usually a totally different reel only sold as a combo. If you buy the combo's listed in the catalog or sale paper and they list the reel model and rod choice, you will be getting the reel you want, along with the rod you want. Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted December 28, 2014 Super User Posted December 28, 2014 Is there any model designation at all, ever so slight, as to be able to identify them once the "combo" is separated? This almost smacks of false advertising. Not sure why I even care about this, just bugs me I guess that people even have to think about this kind of stuff that goes on. Sorry to bring this up necro post..but I got suckered once on this. The difference I noticed other than what has been posted less quality are the following: 1. The finish seems shinier on the special buy. 2. The special buy also is made in China vs Made in Korea. 3. When fishing them side by side, you can tell there is a difference..but not night and day difference. I would never buy the PQ Tournament combo ever again. For the price I could get a real PQ on sale or a better used reel like a Citica E or D. It still in my arsenal, decent reel but it is on one of my rods that i barely use. Quote
Super User HoosierHawgs Posted December 28, 2014 Super User Posted December 28, 2014 Carbonlight or PQ. The CL is on sale for the same price as the PQ. At that price go CL. If you want a heavier duty reel go for the JM Signature. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted December 29, 2014 Super User Posted December 29, 2014 Well, that was three months ago… 1 Quote

I saw this also w/another BPS combo. I bought a ProLite reel, it was nice, then saw the combo online. Reel had totally different specs. 3 less bearings even. Quote
Preytorien Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 i have a carbonlite and love it. very light Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted December 30, 2014 Super User Posted December 30, 2014 Your Lews aren't actually "Lews" they are Doyos branded as Lews. Doyo sells their reels to a number of companies including BPS and pure fishing who in turn, brand the Doyo as their own product. Doyo does make solid reels though although parts can be difficult to get a hold of years down the line if the reel is no longer in production. BPS does not manufacture anything except boats at their subsidiaries. Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted December 30, 2014 Super User Posted December 30, 2014 BPS does not manufacture anything except boats at their subsidiaries. And Lew's doesn't even make boats... Quote

I got one of those about 10 years ago. It was my 2nd baitcasting combo. The reel quit working, just locked up on me about a year after getting it. Took it back and they gave me store credit and I got a citica for like $30 more. The rod was a "Qualifier" not a "Pro Qualifier" Luckily, I wanted a 6'6" M and they had none in stock so they gave me a rain check. I went back a few weeks later and they said they didnt have the rods anymore so I could go pick out an Extreme or Bionic Blade. I ended up spending like $100 all together to get an extreme rod and Citica. Both still in use. Quote
