CarolinaBoy4Life Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 If you guy's had the choice of BPS reel's which would you choose and why? The Pro Qualifier, Carbonlite, Extreme, Johnny Morris Signature Series? I know you may be brand loyal to Lew's, Abu, Shimano etc. but just wanting input and opinions on BPS higher end reels. Quote
Super User *Hootie Posted September 24, 2014 Super User Posted September 24, 2014 Having worked at BPS and having used all the reels you listed, I have to say I will take the PQ every time. It is a workhorse. Hootie 2 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted September 24, 2014 Super User Posted September 24, 2014 Carbonlight or PQ. The CL is on sale for the same price as the PQ. 1 Quote
CarolinaBoy4Life Posted September 24, 2014 Author Posted September 24, 2014 Yeah I seen that I just bought two of em up! Saved $30 on em and got free shipping with the SHIP75 promo Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 Stick to the pq and carbon lite for value with very good performance 1 Quote
CarolinaBoy4Life Posted September 24, 2014 Author Posted September 24, 2014 I have about 5 PQ right now and 2 Carbonlites. Havent got my hand's on a JM Sig series cause I heard they really are not that much better for the price point. Quote
Brian6428 Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 Just like the other guys said, PQ is a workhorse. Also, wait until it is on sale. I got a pro qualifier rod and reel last year on black friday for $70 total. That is $30 off the reel and a free rod! It goes on sale quite often for $80, which is a great deal. 1 Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted September 25, 2014 Super User Posted September 25, 2014 I have four PQ's and they rock. Second best baitcasters I've used besides Curados and Chronarchs. 1 Quote
Super User K_Mac Posted September 25, 2014 Super User Posted September 25, 2014 One more vote for the PQ. I have four well used ones that have performed well. I have no experience with the Carbonlite. I have a couple of older Extremes that are ok, but I will not buy another. J Franco and DVT are two guys with a lot of reel service experience. You can trust their recommendations. The PQ is a very good reel for the money. 1 Quote
CarolinaBoy4Life Posted September 25, 2014 Author Posted September 25, 2014 Unfortunately I haven't come across the PQ while onsale. I did buy a new one with a carbonlite rod combo. And the other's I purchased were from the Fishing Flea Market on here and picked up three for $175. I love em very good reel not just for the money but period. I appreciate the feed back guy's! Quote
GoDeep Posted September 25, 2014 Posted September 25, 2014 The PQ is a good reel, but you can find a Tatula for near the price of a PQ these days. Quote

While this may be a good deal, you're not getting the same reel as you would if you bought it from behind the counter. I got the combo a couple years ago at xmas time and took it back immeditately. The reel was not to the usual standards of the PQ. A few weeks ago I got to talking to an employee at BPS, and he stated that the reels they manufacture for the combo are not the same as the usual PQ and are not as good of quality. Quote
CarolinaBoy4Life Posted September 26, 2014 Author Posted September 26, 2014 So the one's that you purchase in the rod/reel combo are not the same quality as just purchasing the reel seperate? I purchased a PQ reel and Carbonlite rod combo and haven't noticed any difference in regards to quality or feel. I didn't buy mine on black friday though I just ordered it off the BPS website back in June 1 Quote

Delaware Valley Tackle Posted September 26, 2014 Posted September 26, 2014 I'd like to take apart a PQ and combo PQ side by side because I can't imagine a company like that intentionally undermining their own signature product so blatantly. I also don't believe that every clerk has insight into the manufacturing and marketing of the items they sell. Many can't even answer the simplest of questions. Every brand has a lemon sneak thru QC occasionally and I bet that's what happened here and the fact that it was on a combo is coincidental. 1 Quote

You don't have to....the "combo" version is loaded with plastic bushings, a cheaper handle and star, and is pretty rough. One year, I think the reel was a graphite frame. Quote
CarolinaBoy4Life Posted September 26, 2014 Author Posted September 26, 2014 I haven't had any issues out of my PQ/Carbonlite combo's or any BPS reel's for that matter. But all mine are either PQ or the original gold Carbonlites. Just ordered the new carbonlite hopefully no issues there either. Honestly for $70 I think it may be a differnet reel with cheaper components placed on a cheap rod. But I have a hard time thinking BPS would intentionally lead people to believe it is the same quality as a standard PQ. BPS has alway's been upstanding with any concerns or issues I've had and it's never been a QC issue thankfully. Honestly it just seems like they would worry too much about reputation and customer satisfaction to do that but that's just my thought's. But from what everyone is saying it sounds true. Quote
Super User *Hootie Posted September 26, 2014 Super User Posted September 26, 2014 Don't know if I am misunderstanding this, but when someone came into our store and wanted the combo in catalog, we would have them choose the Carbonlite rod they wanted and choose which gear ratio reel they wanted. The reel came off the shelf with all the other PQ's. They weren't different or special order reels. Hootie 1 Quote

CarolinaBoy4Life Posted September 26, 2014 Author Posted September 26, 2014 That's good to hear about the Carbonlite combo. I have never once had an issue with any QC or components. I think everyone is referring to the PQ reel PQ rod combo which is a different rod. The total combo is $70 on black Friday sales. It's a cheaper end rod but people think that that PQ components are also different but with the same PQ name. Quote

Hootie I'm referring to the occasional sales flier combo that says, "Special Buy" Pro Qualifier combo. It isn't the same. When you go into the store, they are pre bundled. Quote

Delaware Valley Tackle Posted September 26, 2014 Posted September 26, 2014 Is there any model designation at all, ever so slight, as to be able to identify them once the "combo" is separated? This almost smacks of false advertising. Not sure why I even care about this, just bugs me I guess that people even have to think about this kind of stuff that goes on. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted September 26, 2014 Super User Posted September 26, 2014 Aside, from the fact that they are completely different reels? I don't have the two to look at right now. You'd know, there's no "disguise." Quote
