What's The Most Cost Efficient Way To Replace Skirts For Buzzbaits And Spinnerbaits?

So I have some perfectly good spinnerbaits and buzzbaits that are missing their skirts. I don't want to add a minnow bait, I simply want to get a good replacement skirt for them. Once I opened a brand new Terminator spinnerbait and the skirt was laying in the package broken off. My friend tossed his brand new Cavitron buzzbait out and on the first cast lost the skirt. He laughed and said they must be poor quality. After a weekend of killing the fish with them his opinion was changed, Cavitrons are awesome despite the initial problem.

So, what's a good replacement skirt for these buzzbaits and spinnerbaits?

I would really like it if I could pick them up somewhere like Cabelas or Gander Mountain rather then order them from someplace and pay shipping and handling.

I like the Do It skirts, Cabela's carries them. They're banded skirts so you can just slip them on. Buy some tiny wire ties or zip ties at the hardware store and zip tie them on so you don't have to worry about them falling off again.

The tip about replacing the rubber band with a tiny zip tie or wire is a good one.  I do that quite a bit.

The local fishing tackle store that I go to too much, Rogers Lures in Liberty, MO, carries a good selection of War Eagle and Terminator replacement skirts.  I like the War Eagle colors.  They carry some of the Do it skirts also, but I haven't tried any of them, for spinnerbaits.

Now, jig skirts, once I tear up a jig skirt that jig goes into the used jig box.   There are a lot of entires in the jig box.  Some day I figure I'll get into making skirts but until then, I just have a large box of used bare jigs.

I use fishingskirts.com because they have a huge variety of skirts you can make. They sell pre made skirts, but they mostly sell the tabs. Generally, a two tab skirt is what I use on spinnerbaits, buzz baits, and jigs. You can make so many different colors its nuts, and the quality is good too. To get started you just need the skirt tool ($10), pack of bands (cheap), and then you select your tabs. They come in packs of 10 for $2.50.

Strike King's Perfect Skirt is pretty good. Terminators too. I use the zip tie method on any skirts that use a rubber sleeve to hold the stands together as they will eventually rot. Only drawback is you cant swap them out then. I think you can get Chatterbait skirts and Northland, which don't have the rubber sleeve, at BPS.

Go to TW and search "Replacement Skirts" Plenty to choose from.

Put a soft swimbait on instead...

Or order skirts from TW, siebert or any other online retailer lol

That's one option. I am hoping to be able to pick them up rather then pay shipping and handling though.

So you put them on with the factory rubber ring then cut it off and add a zip tie or you just put the zip tie over the factory rubber ring?

I put it directly above the band. If there's no room you can usually get the band to flip down out of the way and then put a zip tie on. You can put it over the band too, it's just a little bulkier.

Cool. Thanks. I'll send the info.

Bobby, didn't you say you always use a trailer hook on your buzzbaits or am I wrong?

The cost of fishing skirts has never really hit me in the wallet.  Chasing skirts....that's another story. ;)

Can someone please reply with the suggested zip tie size & source  and  wire size & source used for a typical 3/8th oz. size spinner bait ?

Well, to answer the origianl question, the most cost efficent way is to order tabs and collars in bulk and build your own. Not only is it the most affordable, its completely customizable. I love creating my own custom color combinations. I use a Naked Baits skirt expander (its the real deal) and their skirt tabs along with Skirts Unlimited tabs.
