This weekend I was targeting bowfin like I do almost every weekend in this one pond and I'm just doing my thing fishing a weightless fluke and its sinking then I feel the slightest tap and went with my gut and had did a hero hookset super hard, Solid as a rock. I figured it was a stump but then the stump started swimming off! I'm concentrating really hard at this point doing everything right, this is a big fish, I have my drag set pretty high and its still pulling drag here and there... well I fight this fish all the way to the bank and he buries himself in the pads that surround the edge of the pond and POP the hook comes flying at me...

I would have loved to get a picture with that fish... it jumped out of the water while I was fighting it and it was easily a 10lb+ Bowfin. The pond isn't very big so its very possible I can hook him again one day because he is still there!

I've caught some big bowfin but none anywhere close to that one...

it happens.  those guys are hard to hook in my experience since their mouth is so bony.  I love catching them and wish i could target them more but they seem to be pretty hit or miss as far as locations go and are pretty solitary from what i have researched.   I caught my biggest one ever this year on a wake bait no less....measured 25".

Well there are swamp/ponds around here with tons of Huge ones and there are places in the back of the lake I fish that get really swampy where you can catch them too. That's where I go to target them, they are hard to hook, you gotta go with ethier a light-wire hook setup or 50lb braid and a super line hook. No in between or you won't hook em! Like this one I lost, I set the hook like a champion and he still came un-buttoned ....

One problem I have in the pond that I fish for bowfin is that a bowfin bite and a warmouth bite feel similar sometimes (kinda like a tap, tap, tap like they are chomping on it...) , you can throw anything out there and a warmouth will bite it and if you set the hook like you would on a bowfin you have a warmouth flying out of the water or your rod gets tangled from trying to set the hook on nothing...

The warmouth are the perfect baitfish for big bowfin though, the pond produces some big ole warmouth too!

In a day of fishing,  we brought over two dozen in the boat.  We lost just as many from just after hookset to boatside.  They are way fun.  We had one follow a spinnerbait,  nipping at it all the way to the boat.  At the end,  he just dangled the bait just under the surface like a dog treat and POW!

Went out bowfin fishing again today, caught this guy on the first cast... Guess the curse got to me and I couldn't get another hooked haha

Pretty good one, not huge though... I'll get that big one one day!

Caught another good mudfish! Still looking for that hawg...

I had one live bait rig out while I was fishing the artificials but to get the bait (war mouth) I was throwing a tiny grub on a jig out with 12lb mono tied loosely to my wrist with my hands and pulling it in fast. Well Im pulling the grub when it gets hit by a big bowfin! So im trying to hold onto the line which i just knew was about to fail but the hook straightened out first and the jig head shoots out of the water like a .22 bullet hittting me in the wrist.... It HURT, now my wrist has a swollen welt haha....
