Super User tcbass Posted September 2, 2014 Super User Posted September 2, 2014 I have 3 Wake Baits now, a Biovex Amp, Rapala Waking Minnow, and Arashi Wake bait. When I use them, they all sort of go under and then back to the surface. Even when reeled slow with a high rod tip. I thought they were supposed to run just below the surface, creating a wake and bulge. How are Wake Baits supposed to run? Quote
flipin4bass Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 Wake baits run on the surface or subsurface. Quote
Super User gulfcaptain Posted September 2, 2014 Super User Posted September 2, 2014 They are supposed to run right at or below the surface. Most make a little v wake. You may have to wind even slower. I know the Rapala Waking Minnow is a really slow crack and to get it right at the top you have to wind slowly or it tends to dive. But it mainly depends on the bait as they all have different actions depending on the lip and angle. Quote
Super User ChrisD46 Posted September 2, 2014 Super User Posted September 2, 2014 Don't forget a larger diameter mono line as well - something (Stren , Sufix , Big Game, etc.) in the 12lb. to 15lb. range (0.30mm to 0.38mm diameter) , a higher rod tip and a slower retrieve rate will get it done for you . Super User smalljaw67 Posted September 2, 2014 Super User Posted September 2, 2014 My biggest problem with wake baits were most would dive to a foot or so when retrieved at more than a moderate pace. That said, just about every wake bait is made to go just under the surface to make a pronounced bulge, some you need to go slow while others are ok unless you go too fast and heavy mono helps in the speed department.
