JThoms38 Posted August 31, 2014 Posted August 31, 2014 The statement "all hooks are sharp" came into my brain a few years back...not exactly sure where from or who said it, but my point being who thinks you need the laser sharpened trokar and who is doing just vine with a cheaper hook such as laser sharp from eagle claw, I have both expensive as well as inexpensive hooks and the only difference seems to be strength when bent...thoughts? Super User Catch and Grease Posted August 31, 2014 Super User Posted August 31, 2014 Sharp is sharp IMO haha I guess it can never hurt to be sharper but I do fine with my cheaper hooks and eagle claws... 1 Quote
kikstand454 Posted August 31, 2014 Posted August 31, 2014 You can "get by" with alot of things. Brand new, the laser sharps are fine for everyday rec fishing. Problem is their points roll fairly easily. Most house brand hooks (bps, acedemy, etc) have fairly decent hooks, and that's what I rec fish with. But when its tournement time- the trokars come out. There is a DEFINITE difference to me and I want every advantage I can. 1 Quote
Super User Jrob78 Posted August 31, 2014 Super User Posted August 31, 2014 If you're just fishing for fun and don't mind losing the occasional fish due to bad hook ups, use whatever hooks you want. In some cases it probably doesn't matter much, in others, it definitely does. Why spend all that money for a boat, rods, reels, baits, gas, etc, and then use cheap hooks? The hook is the part that actually catches the fish and they're cheap compared to everything else. 2 Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted August 31, 2014 Super User Posted August 31, 2014 Geez...Pick something else to same money on. The cost of "expensive" hooks is chump-change. NOTHING is more important than a quality hook, although your line is a close 2nd! Quote
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted August 31, 2014 BassResource.com Administrator Posted August 31, 2014 Regardless of brand or cost, all hooks become dull at some point (pun intended). Here's how to keep them sharp! http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-videos/hook-sharpen.html Quote
Super User Raul Posted August 31, 2014 Super User Posted August 31, 2014 Forget about the finantial cost, comapred to other things you use it´s absolutely ludicrous you "save" in hooks. It was maybe 5-6 years ago, my compadre, my friend Moises and I went to a lake know for big bass, down here when you say BIG bass it really means BIG bass, that means 10+ pounders and who wouldn´t want to catch a 10+ pounder¨? so there we are, I grab a jig, hook a Brush Hog as tráiler make a cast to a bassy big mommy lookin ´ spot, hell even the cast was beautiful, I let the bait sink, I feel as the bait hits the bottom and then I make the bait hop, as the bait begins to fall I detect the bite, reel in the slack line and set the hook hard, well imagine you just set the hook on a log cuz that´s exactly how it felt, for a few moments nothing happened and then she begins to move, for what looked like an eternity I wasn´t able tomove the fish from the distance at what I caught her, she only moved from side to side, then slowly she began to loose terrain until I was able to reel her in closer to the boat, for several minetes I fought her until maybe 10-12 ft from the boat she jumped, gave me the finger and spit my jig on my face. This is not the story of the one that got away and you never saw, this in not about it must have been X pounds, this is the story of a 12+ lber that got away ( I know how a 12 lber looks like cuz I´ve caught several ), that fish was easily over 12 lbs. So there I am looking closely at my jig and guess what ? my finger tip is sharper than that hook, The hook never penetrated the mouth. Lesson learned, before you tie a bait you have to check the hook sharpness, and if it doesn´t "stick" then it´s not sharp enough. Quote
