Went fishin to practice for an upcoming tourny today and i planned on testing my shiny new megabass 110.

Started out fishin some new spots with a beaver and jig and did ok. Found some decent fish so i decided it was time to run down the lake to tje clear water and see what this megabass vision 110 in tenn shad looks like in action! Wow is all i can say, totally unique movement, casts a mile!

Then things went down hill...sorta

Third cast i get slammed and its a four maybe five pound striper. Hooks come out no biggie. Next cast boom another one hooks come out again...totally my fault.

A few mins later i hook into a three ish smallie get it to the boat and all is good. First megabass fish!

But i wanna another shot at those striper! So i work the area again with no joy and i notice the paint is chipping off something bad...really? 40mins in rhe water and paint is comin off?

Then i find he school again and its fish on! Nice striper only once again off it comes and this time i get a straight hook. I fix it and go back at it. Boom anothet striper this one goes 5lbs and gets in the boat and oh look another straight hook this time on tje front treble.

I fix the hook and retie and then it happens...i cast out and get a slight overrun. Fix it and somehow my line just breaks. 30yds of line gone. Megabass gone! Sucks...i must have had a knick i didnt notice...im cranky now lol but a pointer replaced the vision and i got a few more striper to the boat

All that being said that megabass vision is nasty! I will have another. I am however dissapointed in the paint and the hooks given the price tag

If you are going to fish with heavier line or for stripers you should swap the hooks...The standard 110 is not a striper bait :)

The paint has chipped a little on some of mine but they keep on catching fish. I've never had a jerkbait or crankbait that didn't chip after some use though...Nature of the beast with swinging trebles I guess.

There's a youtube video of Aaron Martens describing when and why he swaps hooks on the 110, don't have the link now but it should be pretty easy to find. I think the gist of it was for 10 lb line an normal conditions the stock hooks are great...But heavier line or chance for larger fish he swaps them for heavier ones.

I was throwing 12# invisx

Yeah most of lucky craft pointer are scratched to hell and still catch fish but the megabass was shedding paint in big chunks...

I know they arent for striper lol. They just happened to invaded one of my honey holes because rhe baitfish were thick there lol...plus im a gluton for drag pullers

Some of the MB colors seem more prone to chipping, the metallic/flashy colors I have seem to have scratched/chipped more. I honestly don't care, by the time they reach the point where all the hardware is broken and paint is chipped bare I've usually caught around 100 fish on it...So to me, I've gotten my money's worth out of that one and I'll just replace it. More often than not, I'll loose it to a toothy fish before that time comes though :(.

I don't bother with changing the hooks personally, I use 10 lb line and I keep a stash of trebles in the boat just in case one gets a little mangled on a 5 lber or pike :)

Try a Luck E Strike STX jerkbait. Comes in several of the same colors as the Megabass, looks similar, moves similar, and catches fish just as well in my experience. I've had both, I no longer own any Megabass, couldn't tell a big enough difference between the two other than price. Megabass are super fragile too. Last one I had was one I found, bill fell off during the retrieve, just fell off for no apparent reason. It was a 110 Magnum, a nearly $30 jerkbait. Had I paid for that thing it probably would have spun me out for quite awhile.

How is the action of a Vision 110 (or STX) different than a LC Slender Pointer?

oe

Ironically i switched to a slender pointer yesterday

I noticed the megabass had a wider motion and took alittle less effort imo compared to the pointer. Casting distance was similar

They are similar...LC jerks seem to have a 'crisper', more predictable action...Whereas the 110 has a more rolling, unpredictable action. In my opinion/experience anyway :) The STX is close to to the 110 in this regard, many people I know have substituted them to save $$ and still remained successful. I still prefer the 110 and 110 Jr most of time, many times they have out produced other baits of all brands (including STX), can't put my finger on a specific reason why...they just do for me (both against other anglers in tournaments and my co-anglers on the same spot).

I have to add that i got a vision 110 premium hook stuck in my thumb and had to have it removed at the hospital with lots of force and painful injections.    here is the best guide to megabass jerkbait colors and their whole color system. if you want to save money, i suggest ordering them on ebay.  i got 4 vision 110 +1   jerkbaits for $59 with shipping.  you can also buy used old ones too.

I switched over to the STX and academy sports h2o model. I haven't had any problems with the h2o but the STX for the most part needs to be tuned eight out of the box with some cut up suspend dots.

After I've seen some pickerel enhale the entire bait I stopped buying 110s

Here is the lowdown on the Katsuage outbarbs on the Vision 110 , which, by the way, happen to be made by VMC. If you watch that Aaron Martens video he tells you he switches out the hooks because he prefers to use heavier line and that is key because that bait was designed similar to the spy bait deal, light line, in Japan the anglers are fishing pressured waters and clear water so they use light line, lighter than what we normally use. The hooks were meant to be used with 6lb to 8lb line max, so if you bend them it was because of heavier line and therefore, too much pressure.  That said, I replace the Katsuage hooks with the same size VMC Barbarian outbarb, thay look similar but the VMC brand is made with slightly larger diameter wire so they can handle 12# line and it doesn't affect the action but I saw some guys wondering why there bait wasn't working too well after they put Owner Stinger ST-41 hooks on, well even the ST-36 have more weight so it will affect it.

I have been fishing it on 10lb Toray Superhard Super Strong and I haven't had any problems with them. One thing I don't like is that a lot of hooks will cause it to be sinking from what I understand.

Tomstung, I know exactly how you feel. I was throwing my brand new Huddleston and it got cut in half by a tiger muskie :/

IMO, the STX gets deeper and has a more subdued action the the LC Slender Pointer (the 97MR anyways). The pointer only dives a few feet and has a pretty aggressive slashing action and more roll. Those are my 2 favorite suspending jerkbaits without a doubt.
