Has Any Other Revolutionary Lure/bait Been Eclipsed By An Improvement So Quickly?

Tommy Biffle created bottom bugging and his signature free-swinging football jig the Biffle Hardhead. With this came invention came a great jig that floats a boat above the jig head like no other jig head before it could.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

However, a short time after people thought of a great improvement to this idea. Make a jig head that can interchange hooks. This allows you to choose the hook brand you prefer, change out the hook if it's damaged or rusted without throwing away the whole head, putting a larger or smaller hook on, quickly replacing the hook with a new sharp hook, or whatever reason you want to change hooks. Some use an O-ring, other uses other methods such as the KVD Mustach version which will utilize the KVD Fastach Clip.

This improvement would be akin to Gary Yamamoto creating the Senko and then someone quickly creating one that is improved by being made out of a plastic that has 10X the durability.

 

 

 

So, has any other revolutionary lure/bait been eclipsed by an improvement so quickly?

Actually Shannon made a jig head very similar back in the 50's, the hook clipped on like a safety pin or today's snaps.

meh, biffle heads aren't in my regular rotation.  Tried em, didn't like em.  Now a Chatterbait, that is an awesome lure

Guys that hand inject Senkos recently have perfected a formula that is identical bait to Garys that are very durable.

Not that I know of, Yamamoto created the Senko design, the heavy loaded salt formula and didn't copy it.

If you look at antique lures there are some amazing designs. I know of the Shannon jig head design because I fished with them using a 9" Uncle Josh black widow eel pork rind trailer in the early 60's.

I'm not sure that I would consider the Biffle Head "revolutionary" or the addition of a split ring an "eclipsing improvement."  Just saying...

They're very versatile for sure, one of my favorite ways to present a soft plastic since I starting fishing them, but there's all sorts of jigheads to present a soft plastic out there that are capable of presenting a bait like a Hard Head jig can, the Hard Head is just kind of a do all head instead of a technique specific bait. 

 

You can make a regular swinging football head so the hook is interchangeable. If you have a rusted or damaged hook, cut it off at the eyelet, add a split ring, then a screw lock style hook of whatever size you want.

I agree with you.  I fish the Hard Head a lot and it has become a go to for me.   I do think it's an improvement over a fixed football head, in a lot of cases, but it isn't really that much different.  I've also had to cut hooks off and add my own split ring and new hook.

Jointed jigs have been around for as long as I remember. The Jika Rig has pretty much replaced most of my Texas Rig fishing. None of these have been as remarkable as the Senko craze that started 20 years ago. Before that it was Slug-O. Everyone fished that thing. They still work, too.
