....unless there was a lot of structure around I would have trusted my drag (assuming you have a relieable reel).

What he said.  But hey, there'll be more opportunities.  This one just fanned the flames.

I feel your pain bro. I went out early this past Monday to do some fishing before work. I came to a nice spot at the lake with a half submerged log, and it looked like a promising spot. So I threw a double bladed buzzbait and ran it right by the log. As I expected, my buzzbait gets sucked under and the fish started to pull my drag hard. The first run lasted about 3 seconds and then his second run came almost immediately afterwards. After the 2 runs, I thought that I had the big fish under control. And wouldn't you know it, as I was pulling it in, it made the dreaded leap through the air, shook it's head a couple of times and threw my buzzbait. I stood there in disbelief for a few mins. I couldn't believe that I just lost that fish. I tried getting that fish back for the remainder of my outing, but it was gone.

I was devastated. I could not get my mind off that lost fish....imagine how much work I got done that day ;)

I was determined to land that fish no matter what it took (well almost). I went back Tuesday morning....nothing. And this morning I went back out to the same spot to try my luck. I ran that buzzbait next to the log just as before and I felt a tug and my buzzbait went under water again. But the fish must have somehow miss the bait because the bait came flying back when I did a hookset...I didn't feel any pressure at all. I tried to make myself feel better by saying that it was probably a smaller fish since it didn't smash the lure. I tried the buzzbait a few more times in the same spot and came up empty. Again I was devastated. I went off to a different part of the lake to test out my luck, but nothing there either. So on the way back to my car, I decided to try my "unlucky" spot one more time. This time, I threw a pearl Senko and twitched it past the log not expecting much from my last cast of the day. Next thing I know, I feel a strong tug on my line. I pull back my rod slightly (didn't set the hook because I was using a circle hook) and the fish made 3 nice runs before I was able to pull it to shore. The whole time, I was holding my breath and praying that I would not lose it again. The fish ended up weighing 5.26lbs. Not a giant, but pretty decent in my neck of the woods.

So the moral of the story is keep fishing for it. Maybe try a new lure. You might just pull that trophy fish in again.

Well they say you learn more from the ones you lose than the ones you land...

Total kick in the jewels though, ugh... But at least you know it's there!

First outing of this year I was throwing a homemade wake bait. I tossed it into a hole in the reeds, let the ripples settle and on my first crank a large bass exploded on it and ran right at me. I reeled like a crazy man to catch up to her. She got to the side of my Kayak and I was trying to figure out how to lip her and BAM, she broke off with one final head shake. There went my homemade wake bait and my PB. I'm guessing she was 6 lbs easy but probably pushing 7 and that's pretty big for up north.

What did I learn? Well, I am much more careful cleaning the epoxy off of my line ties now after I finish my homemade lures. I believe that was the culprit. I suppose I could use a net but in my yak that would just be one more thing to get in the way.
