1099gl Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 not sure which to get the look like they have about the same performance but you cant tell by looks (talking about newest version of each) Quote
Super User Raul Posted August 22, 2014 Super User Posted August 22, 2014 In theory the Chronarch is a finer reel than the Curado, but i ends up your wallet being the deciding factor, nowdays the gap in price between the both reels has closed so much that for a few more dollars you get a nicer reel, back in the 90´s the price difference between both reels was very significant, almost 50% more. I don´t have a new Curado, I´ve seen the review made by TT, there are interesting features in the new reel but I´m not quite sure about them, on the other hand, the Chronarch is a more traditional reel and the design has been proven, the CH200E is a higher end versión of the Citica and Curado E, the 100 size is really a higher end version of the 50 size Curado and the design is still kept in the Core 50 Mg. The truth is, if I were in a rush I would put my money in the Chronarch. ( already proven ) or wait maybe a year before I would consider purchasing a Curado. Quote
JGBassinAL Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 I have both the Curado 200IHG and the Chronarch 150CI4HG. I find the Chronarch to be a little smoother than the Curado, but not by much. I have two of the Curados, a bunch of Curado E's, and one Chronarch. I plan to get more of the new Curados because I want my reels to be workhorses for the lowest dollar amount possible, and I know the new Curado is a great option. The Chronarch is a great reel to, but I consider the Chronarch CI4 to be more of a higher end reel, and while they are nice to have, I'll save the $80 difference and go with a Curado when I know it is going to do the job just as well as the Chronarch will. 1 Quote
Super User Raul Posted August 22, 2014 Super User Posted August 22, 2014 There´s a 10 dollars difference between the Curado I and the Chronarch E ( both sizes ). Quote

War Eagle 44 Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 Also there is very little difference between the Chronarch E and the Curado E. I wouldn't personally describe the Chronarch as an "up scale" version, especially in the 50 size. Fantastic reels just not that much different from the Curado E. 1 Quote
bass1980 Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 I have the Chronrach ci4+, Curado I, Chronarch E 200, and Chronarch 50's. IMHO the Curado I is the smoothest of them all and cast the best on 3/8oz and up. For some reason my Ci4+ just didn't feel right with heavy applications. I was using it for frogging and jigs with 50lb braid. I may be from the ci4 material when pairing it up with heavy braids and lures that didn't seem like it was a good combination. When I used my Curado I on the same setup it was the beast tamer. It's hard to explain but the Curado I just seems like it meant for work horse duty. I have now switched my Ci4+ to throw senkos and flukes on 10lb flouro on a medium stick. Haven't had enough seat time to see if it's more suitable for the ci4+. On theory the Ci4+ should cast light lures better than the Curado from the spool. As of right now the only thing I like the Ci4+ more than the Curado I is the light weight and the killer looks. Other than that the Curado I is the best sub $300 reel in the Shimano family.....maybe ever! I actually like it more than the Chronarch D that used from a buddy a few times. I will say this, the Chronarch/Curado 50 series is still my favorite of them all. If they made the Curado I in a 50 series just about all of my reels would be that except my light duty Daiwas. 1 Quote
1099gl Posted August 23, 2014 Author Posted August 23, 2014 I took a look at the 50 sized chronarch E is the smaller reel size still worth the $200 dollars? Quote
War Eagle 44 Posted August 23, 2014 Posted August 23, 2014 I took a look at the 50 sized chronarch E is the smaller reel size still worth the $200 dollars? In my opinion this is something only you can answer. I guess it depends on what you're planning to use the reel for, some guys (myself included) love the 50 size for almost everything whereas others only find it suitable for "finesse type" fishing. I fall into the camp that likes the 50's for multiple techniques, especially when pared with braid. 1 Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted August 23, 2014 Super User Posted August 23, 2014 I have 4 of the 50 sized variants. I use them for 90% of my fishing needs. During the labor day sales you can find one new for 160-170. Quote

bass1980 Posted August 23, 2014 Posted August 23, 2014 The only limitation for the 50 is if you are using 20lb or so mono/flouro and for a technique that requires long distance casting. If you are using braids then you can get more lines in because braids are smaller in diameter vs the same lb rating of mono/flouro. I use 20lb power pro and it's about the size of 6lb mono so the reel can fit about 170 yards, plenty of line. I also use one 50 series with 50lb braids for jigs. When casting i don't need to cast very far from a boat but I am usually pitching the jigs into cover or docks. 50lb is equivalent to 12lb mono so it'll fit about 85 yards of line. No way can anyone cast 85 yards on a 3/8-1/2oz jig anyways. I just think the 50 series is one of most versatile reels ever made. It can throw light lures really good, not at the level of their BFS reels, and it can also handle the heavy applications like jigs and punch with it's guts being built tough. Is the 50 series worth $200? Well IMO it is but if you are thinking bang for the buck and you don't have like 12 setups like me then get the Curado I. It is very affordable and it is very good. You should be able to use the Curado I for many applications. Good luck on your decision. Quote

JGBassinAL Posted August 23, 2014 Posted August 23, 2014 I wish they made a size 50 in the new curado You, me, and everyone else I know Quote
bass1980 Posted August 23, 2014 Posted August 23, 2014 It has already been unofficially announced that it isn't by a well known Shimano rep but hey we can always hope they change their mind. Quote
GaterB Posted August 23, 2014 Posted August 23, 2014 I just don't understand why Shimano would choose NOT to make a 50 size in the new Curado. Was the 50e not one of the most popular versions of the Curado ever made? I have never heard anyone that used one say they didn't like it. Now you add the new technology that the Curado I series has, and my guess is that Shimano wouldn't be able to keep them on the shelves! Quote
GaterB Posted August 23, 2014 Posted August 23, 2014 Didn't mean to hijack the thread. To the OP, Curado's have traditionally been the "workhorse" reel in the shimano lineup, with Chronarchs being a more refined offering. IMO you can't go wrong with either. I'd suggest taking the rod you intend to use with it to a store and mount both on it to see which feels better. I've found out that a well balanced setup can make a good rod and reel into an outstanding combo, and vica versa Quote

Super User iceintheveins Posted August 24, 2014 Super User Posted August 24, 2014 Anyone here fished both the Curado I and Chronarch E? I'm looking to get one or the other for casting deep cranks. Any differences in performance? I know the E has the old style VBS and the I has the newer one with the additional external setting. One thing that turns me off is I hear the I comes PACKED with grease that negatively effects it's performance. Quote

It feels MUCH better when cranking a resistance bait too. Mine wasn't too packed with grease, but the knobs were leaking grease grease throughout the first trip. I should've wiped them off before going. After I got home from that trip I took the knob off and threw in some bearings that were oiled, and it's been great ever since. I also flushed the spool bearings and that helped too. Real easy to do, and the performance upgrade is well worth it. Quote

Are you saying the Curado will launch a 1/2 ounce crank better than the Chronarch too? Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted August 24, 2014 Super User Posted August 24, 2014 Also are you saying the Chronarch E casts 1/4 ounce and light baits better? Quote
Smallmouth Hunter Posted August 24, 2014 Posted August 24, 2014 Also are you saying the Chronarch E casts 1/4 ounce and light baits better?depends how aero-dynamic it is, but for the most part, yes. The 200e spool is 3ish grams (20%) lighter than the I. Quote
bass1980 Posted August 24, 2014 Posted August 24, 2014 I don't have data to back it up but to me the Curado I cast further than the E series. For sure the casting is smoother on the I series. IMO get the Curado I, it's cheaper and has newer technology. 2 Quote
