MassBass Posted August 11, 2014 Posted August 11, 2014 So i pulled out my spro baby popper yesterday evening. Its in the nasty shad color, a baitfish imitation. I got a solid strike and hooked up. I had the fish on and fought it briefly (enough to see it was close to 4 lbs), and then the fish suddenly got unbuttoned close to the boat. I inspected the frog and only one hook was exposed, the other hook was penetrating the side of the frog and clearly was not able to get into the fish. Then i got another smaller strike and waited and set the hook; hauled water. I inspected the frog and the body was burying both hooks and it didn't look right. So wuts going on here? bad luck, or bad lure? Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted August 11, 2014 Super User Posted August 11, 2014 Sometimes the body will twist on the hook & impale itself. Just reposition it so the hooks are pointing up. I sometimes tweak the hooks by opening the gap just a little with a pair of pliers. I use the regular spro poppers not the baby popper. 4 Quote
MassBass Posted August 11, 2014 Author Posted August 11, 2014 Good tip on bending the hooks out. I think thats just what it needed. Quote

I opened the gap up on my popping frog very slightly and rarely miss a fish with it. Quote
Super User Ratherbfishing Posted August 12, 2014 Super User Posted August 12, 2014 Probably half (or more) of the fish I catch on frogs will have only one hook in them-and it's not uncommon for the other hook to get buried in the lure. Sometimes it's how the fish hits which causes the hooks to bury into the plastic. I wouldn't dismiss the bait as being defective just yet. Quote
