Thanks again to everyone for your input. It's hard to tell by reading most of the threads contained in this forum but apparently there are others who use the lower end quality equipment. I appreciate all of the great ideas and product names that were thrown out there. Now it's just time for me to do a little more research on all of them as well as put them in my hands and educate myself on such quality rod feel.

Now I think I should start a similar thread addressing quality reels up to and under $100 to be paired with these great rods.

No need to do that.

The answers you are going to get are:

Bps pro qualifier

Daiwa tatula

Shimano citica

Alternatives may be:

Various quantums

Okuma

Lews speed spool

There you go. Saved you the trouble.

I'm in the same boat as you are, I have a fam and have to be budget minded. For some reason I'm drawn more to the Cabelas brand gear. I have 2 Fish Eagle 50 MH F casting rods an 7' and 6' which go for about $90 each, An 7' HF Tourney Trail EVA split grip casting rod for $65, 6'6" MH/F Pro Guide spinning rod for $44 which is going for $29 on sale right now. Recently I bought 2 6'6" M/F Fenwick Eagle casting rods from Dicks that go for $60 each, but I got them for $50 each using my reward points and or 10 bucks off for anything 50 bucks our more coupon. Last but not least I have a 5'6" UL Ugly Stick for 30 bucks. All these rods have done good by me, and once I become a professional I'll move up to the really good and expensive ones.

I'll be honest with you, I could have the nicest and most sensitive rods with the smoothest reels available one the market and probably still have problems catching fish.  I don't know why I'm having these issues this year.  Even before I'd at least lay it to the dinks in the shallows on power worms but not this year.  I don't know what's going on but it's inspired me to try new techniques such as drop shotting and the sort which I'll be doing tomorrow.

I've got this rod  http://www.***.com/Wright__McGill_Skeet_S-Glass_Casting_Rods/descpage-WMSG.html

My cousin got it from walmart for something like $20.  He didn't want it, just bought it for the price.  I gave him $20 for it and have been using it all year.  That, with an abu garcia blackmax has been my go to crank bait rod.  I have probably caught 100+ fish on it this year, late and smallmouth bass, walleye and pike on it.  NO problems what so ever, best $20 I have ever spent on a rod lol.

  1. im going to be completly honest and the cherrywod poles areamzing and they are 25$

I've always thought that also but much like how I always bought a set of Wal-Mart Bushnell binos before experiencing the true quality of Bushnell binos purchased outside of there.  The quality was outstanding.  I just want to see if, for not too much more, I can gain so much more quality and feeling in my rods.

I haven't had issues with not getting bites, I've been having issues with the fish staying on the hook. I feel the ticks, feel the hits, see the line move, and see the line twitch. I get the hook up, just sometimes the fish spits the hook, and that's on me, and not my gear. I'm sure the higher quality rods have the extra feely quality, but I'm not a tournament fisherman so I'm good with what I have.

I'm not a tournament fisherman either, and like I said before, we live on a tight family based budget.  But with that said, I'd like to find some decent quality equipment for UNDER $100 and upgrade my gear.  I'm honest with myself, I'll never be able to afford the more expensive equipment, but when I do upgrade to some decent stuff I am the guy who takes care of my equipment and maintains it for many years to come.

I hear ya, I'm The Same way. That's why before I buy anything at a certain price range I check out the customers reviews. Also I always try to find discounts or sales.

Posted

What I hear allot around here is always try to put the most money towards a good reel. That's what I try to do, but I shop around and look for the discounts. Some places have their own name brand reels such as BPS our Cabelas which are pretty decent.

Actually, for fish catching performance with jigs/plastics buy the best rod you can afford and pair it with a decent (as in not a throw away) reel. Plan on $50> for spinning and $100> casting except for a PQ etc on sale.

I really want to thank all who've replied.  Apparently there are other quality choices out there for under or right around $100 without having to go slightly over.  I guess there for a moment I got a case of tunnel vision so I appreciate you bringing some of these brands to my attention.  I don't think rods between $50-$100 are discussed and compared enough.  I am not versed enough on brand names to recognize the price of a rod by it's name.

Again, I thank you.  I'll be checking out the H2O's as well as the other rods mentioned.  Also, I can't believe that I forgot about BPS, but I'm glad that I made someone validate them first.  I love BPS for my fishing gear.

The problem is more of the many, many options for this price range.  At right around $100 you'll find stuff from from just about every manu with a few exceptions like anything made with Gary Loomis' name or Dobyns.  You'll just have to get out to a tackle shop, take the reel you plan on using and mount it on the rod in store to see what feels natural and right in YOUR hand.  I own frankentackle and have no real preference for one brand over another, and a lot of my rods are right around the $100 mark or less.  Comfort is the main thing, especially if you plan on spending lots of time on the water.

Cranks and rattles, try Powell diesel crankbait rod @ 60$ it's a 7' glass rod.. With Eva grips at around 3.2 oz.... At TW... They also have graphite sticks as well in the diesel rods... Plus they are a black and not a ugly yellow... Idk which is worse, a yellow rod or white rod, lol!

As always, the lightning rod is probably one of the best budget rods around. Under $50.00

Hootie

Skeet Reese rods are good, but the Berkley Lightning Shock rod is EXTREMELY underrated!! I would put it up against almost anything under $100. My favorite rod ever, by far.

To answer your question, I have two - a pitching rod and a MH cranking rod. Both are a bit heavy, but otherwise good rods. I like the cranking rod for my heavier deep-running baits. Like most, I got both on sale for a bit over $50.

Team daiwa rods are excellent

I agree. I own several Lightning Rods and have bought them for many years but, I recently bought a Diawa Aird casting rod and love it. It's light and very responsive.

The skeet Reese rods aren't too bad, but I would much rather take a veritas. The veritas is a really nice for the price. It can be bought for 70-80 just about anywhere. I would rather take a *** or tatula if there is a sale, but if I can't wait that long the veritas is my 1st choice.
