Super User Crestliner2008 Posted July 10, 2014 Super User Posted July 10, 2014 I asked about what you folks thought would be good for fisherman and got some great suggestions. I did quite a bit of research on sunscreens for myself as well. One kept coming up again and again. So, I bought a tube at WalMarts for about $9.00 a few months ago. It's manufactured by Neutrogena and is called, "UltraSheer" Dry Touch Sunscreen. It's a broad spectrum protection cream, rated as SPF 70.I've been using a mesh brimmed hat, as you folks must know by now from some of my recent picture posts. My receding hairline exposed my forehead to burning from the sun through the mesh top of this hat. The past two months I've been using this stuff regularly and the protection appears to be working. I apply it to my face, neck and forehead before going fishing. It's a white cream and you have to rub it in so it doesn't show, but it's not that hard to do. I think it's worth it so far; especially since I've already had hunks of meat cut off my body due to skin cancer.I also use sun gloves, which I thought I'd never like, but am getting very use to them now. I can cast and fish as usual with nary a thought about them. So, for some of you that spend a lot of time outdoors, you might want to invest in a tube of this sunscreen for your own well-being. The gloves wouldn't be a bad idea either folks! Quote
Super User Raul Posted July 10, 2014 Super User Posted July 10, 2014 You´re still too exposed, you are wearing a cap, wear a hat and cover those ears, wear a sun clava to cover your head and face. Quote
kikstand454 Posted July 10, 2014 Posted July 10, 2014 What Raul said. I wear long sleeves and long pants, wide brimmed boonie and a buff. Gloves too when the sun gets high. I use nutragena spray on my face, wrists/hands and ankles. I know bass fisherman sometimes balk at looking like a saltwater fly fisherman- but hey. Were all dying in the same sun. Quote
Super User WRB Posted July 10, 2014 Super User Posted July 10, 2014 Skin cancer doesn't start when we are older, that damage occurred when we were younger. You younger anglers in your teens and early twenties are the most vulnerable to sunburn/ skin cancer, you can't undo the sun exposure. For us old timers or those over 40 protecting what is left of our skin slows down getting skin cancer along with annual dermatologist skin inspection and pre cancerous removal or surgery to remove cancers, the damage is already done! Go to a good dermatologist, get inspected and use the products they recommend, including SPF fishing clothing, wide brim hats and cover up skin to harmful sun exposure. Some folks are more tolerant to the sun and some of us are not, I am in the skin cancer group and go through surgery on a bi annual basis, getting stitches out in a few days it's pleasant. My friend Bill Murphy died of skin cancer from bass fishing, skin cancer is dangerous! Tom 4 Quote

I hav e had two dermatologists recommend the Neutrrogena products for sun screen. Quote
Ghostshad Posted July 10, 2014 Posted July 10, 2014 I never paid much attention about protecting myself from the sun,and this spring i went to the Dr for a spot on my neck and i had melanoma.Thank God they said they got it just in time,i went through 3 surgery's but they got it all.Buy the best sun screen you can get and were not safe on cloudy days either. They said use a lot and about every 2 hrs reapply. And as the others said cover up all you can. Thank God i'm still able to wet a line God Bless Quote

Not any more! Rarely wear a cap anymore, unless it's early AM and/or we are running on the water. This is part of my gear: Quote
