I'm looking to put together a basic tackle box for my first fishing trip in here in PA. While I understand that weather, water conditions and lake growth all have their place in selecting the appropriate lure, can anyone give me a list of some basic lures and tackle that I should consider purchasing. My initial thoughts were worm hooks, weights for texas rigs,  2 3/8 oz spinner baits, some plastic worms (what colors/kind?), and what else?? I'm looking for a general purpose tackle box at this point to get me started. I can always add to it as I gain more experience and learn more about the sport. My budget for this type of tackle is between $40-$50. I'd prefer to stick to the lower end. Thanks!

Ok I'd say start with 5 inch senkos in green pumpkin. A pack of ewg 3/0 hooks. A few ribbon tail worms. 1/8 to 3/8 bullet weights. 3/8 oz white spinner bait. Maybe a lip less crankbait. I'd try some of these and then branch out. So if you like plastic worms get different styles and colors. Oh and if I were to start over get a black and blue 1/2 oz jig.

Check out the Berkley Havoc baits. They are good/cheap baits ($3/pack). I would suggest the fatty craws, grass pig swimbaits, juice worms, flat dawgs, bottom hoppers and pit boss. Obviously you would need the terminal tackle to accompany those. Throw in a crankbait, spinnerbait, and some jigs to complete your box. Color wise stick with the natural colors.

Thanks for the input. What do you mean by natural colors?

i would skip getting any crankbaits or jigs right now, except maybe a lipless crankbait such as a chrome and black red eye shad.

definately get an all white spinnerbait with a red head, ive had tons of success on the booyah pond magic white spinners.

get a buzzbait, i like white with some chartreuse in the skirt...

get some senkos/stickbaits, any shade of green usually works well for me.

get some straight tailed and curly tailed plastic worms. (red shad, any shade of green, pink, purple)

get some 3/0 or 4/0 worm hooks and ewg worm hooks.

pack of water grimlin bullet weights so you get a variety of sizes in one pack.

and if you get a cheap tackle box to hold you over for now, then youve probably spent your $50 and maybe a more...

I would start with a couple packs of senkos (maybe watermelon and red shad?), a couple packs of ribbon-tails, and a creature or craw bait like brush hogs or rage craws. I'd also get some 2/0 straight shank hooks, some 3/0 EWG hooks, and some tungsten (or maybe lead for a beginner, it's a lot cheaper) bullet weights 3/16-1/4 oz. I definitely think senkos would be the best place to start.

I am sure you have a Wal-mart in your area....who doesn't any more? Go to Wal-mart and grab the following:

2 bags of Strike King shimmy sticks one in green pumpkin, one in black/blue  @ $3/ea

2 bags of 7" Berkley power worms, one in green pumpkin, one in blue/fleck @ $4/ea

A pack of Gamakatsu 3/0 EWG worm hooks @ $5

A pack of 1/8th oz. SK tungsten sinkers in black @ $5

A pack of 1/4 oz. SK tungsten sinkers in black @ $5

A Strike King KVD 1.5 squarebill in chart. black/back @$6

A Rebel Pop-R in black/silver @ $4

And a 1/4 Strike King chart./white spinner bait @ $5

Total bill..about $45 + tax. If you can't catch fish with any of that, find a new spot, there are no fish where you are.

Choose bait colors that imitate the natural color of forage (shad, crawfish, bluegill, etc). No way would I skip out on jigs to start. They are all to versatile!

You only need a pack of hooks and a bag of senkos, I hate those things but I have to admit they work most of the time.

I have to agree with Farmer.  This is as good as it gets for a starting kit.  Master these and you will be well on your way to wasting money on everything else WalMart sells.  LOL

I plan on incorporating this attack plan into my kayak fishing when my new yak arrives.  Looks like solid advice!
