Mccallister25 Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 Alright guys, I want to try a new hook. Iv been a fan of the Gamakatsu EWG's for a while and sometimes the EWG isn't needed. Yall sell me on some hooks. What do you guys prefer? Any brands/models sharper or more superior than the rest? Quote
Super User Catch and Grease Posted July 5, 2014 Super User Posted July 5, 2014 I don't see a whole lot of people using them but the eagle claw EWG are good, the thick wire ones with the cutting edge work good on big thick plastics Quote
BigMoneyGrip Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 What is the hook used for? For worms, I use the Owner Twist Lock. For the soft swimbaits, I like the weighted Mustad. Wacky rigs get the Gamakatsu Weedless Finesse Wide Gap. Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted July 5, 2014 Super User Posted July 5, 2014 It depends on what you are going to use them for, I really like the Daiichi offset shank worm hooks, normal "J" style hook in a light wire configuration and I use them on worms in open water or sparse cover. For the same style hook in a heavier wire for moderate to heavy cover I like the Trokar TK-100 HD worm hook, very sharp and stout. Another hook I really like is the Eagle Claw Lazer Sharp Z bend worm hook, I like it for thin diameter worms, the bend is slightly rounded so it doesn't tear the thin worms up. Try using a few different kind to see what works best, all hooks are sharp now so it comes down to which ones work for your favorite baits the best. Quote
Mccallister25 Posted July 5, 2014 Author Posted July 5, 2014 Im looking for something that would be used for a standard t-rig. No baits bigger than 7" mostly. Sparse cover. Pretty much just looking for a hook with a really good point on it. Quote
Mr_Scrogg Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 Sounds like the Gammy EWG is your hook. Lol thats what I use for TRigs. Quote
5fishlimit Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 I switched to VMC last year for my EWG hooks, and haven't looked back. Quote
Super User Jrob78 Posted July 5, 2014 Super User Posted July 5, 2014 I've started using regular offset worms hooks for worms and thinner plastics. I like the Trokars a lot. Academy puts them on sale for 50% off quite often so I get them at a reasonable price. I haven't had any rolled points and they stick fish really well. Quote
crazyjoeclemens Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 My EWG's are Gamakatsu's as well, but I have some standard worm hooks for more slender baits. I believe they're Eagle Claw Lazer Sharp brand. Quote
Smokinal Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 I always kinda chuckled at Trokar's claims but a couple of years ago I tried their straight shank worm hook and will now use no other. I use their tube hooks as well and fish just stay buttoned on them. when I need more EWG's guess what brand I'm buying? Quote
robster80 Posted July 6, 2014 Posted July 6, 2014 i picked up some gammys on sale at dicks. they had some lunker city texposers on sale so i bought a couple packs of those also. gonna try those straight shank trokars also Quote
Super User FishTank Posted July 6, 2014 Super User Posted July 6, 2014 I like Gamakatsu's EWG's but as an alternative I like Owner and if I can find them Xpoint. The Xpoint is the one of the sharpest hooks I have ever used. Quote
Basspro87 Posted July 6, 2014 Posted July 6, 2014 I used to throw what every was the cheapest but know I use mostly vmc Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted July 6, 2014 Super User Posted July 6, 2014 X-Point, Trokar, Gamakatsu and Owner are all great hooks. If you are looking for something special, try the X-Point. http://www.ttiblakemore.com/home/vm?page=shop.browse&category_id=6 Quote
