Super User everythingthatswims Posted June 22, 2014 Super User Posted June 22, 2014 I was watching a video of some guys that were getting into some small fish while flipping/pitching, some of the fish were actually coming close to hitting the boat on the hook set! This made me wonder, when 50lb+ braid is being used on a super stout rod, has anyone been hurt by something like a 1.5oz jig or weight flying back at them when they missed a fish? I know that yanking baits out of a tree can be scary (I am guilty of accidentally going squirrel fishing from time to time) and I have been hit by some smaller baits flying back at me, it sure doesn't feel good. So do any of you guys know of any flipping/pitching injuries that have occurred? Quote
ABW Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 I remember seeing a video on Tackle Warehouse's YouTube of Ish Monroe setting the hook so hard while punching, the fish would come flying out of the cover and Jared Lintener flinching lol. 1 Quote
Basseditor Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 This time of year, we fish at night with jigs around docks. I wear clear safety glasses because you won't see a jig flying back at you. I got hit pretty hard one night in the forehead, that hurt. 2 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted June 22, 2014 Global Moderator Posted June 22, 2014 I was trying to break a jig off in shallow water one night when it came unsnagged and hit me in the forehead just above my right eye, amazing how much that hurt. The stretch of my line must have really sling-shot it back at me super fast because it felt like I'd just been sucker punched. 2 Quote
speed craw Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 Yes... I lost a fish that got me wrapped up in a submerged tree . In last desperation I pull the line trying to break free . But the branch broke free launching my chatterbait 90mph into the side of my leg . I had a sideways chatterbait bruise on my leg for 2 weeks , coolest bruise ever. 4 Quote
Fish Murderer 71 Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 I knocked my partner out of the boat when I hit him with a chatterbait one night on a hang up. That thing just about hit me- i guess I flinched just enough. this also proved that the Life Proof phone cases are really waterproof! Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted June 22, 2014 Super User Posted June 22, 2014 I don't Flip with braid, I also use a Heavy/ Moderate/ Fast Rod from 7'5" to 7'11", However, I have also used 6'6" heavy rods w/ heavy mono. My Hooksets get it done, certainly not photogenic, no matter... That set up absorbs shock thru out line/ rod/ hook/ sinker/jig... That said, Rigs will and are always going to come back at you. A man on this Thread suggested clear safety glasses at night, I couldn't Agree more. Be Careful, But enjoy the great outdoors. Quote
live2hunt Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 Never got hit from a hook set but my wife got a jig stuck in a tree and I had to get it back... Hook penetrated my hip boots, shorts and thigh. Not a very comfortable walk back to the truck. Quote
ColdSVT Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 Tungsten bullet weights leave a nice bruise...really nice! Lol Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 Eye protection is right up there with a PFD IMO and is standard equipment. As for braid and hooksets etc. I hate to see eye crossing, lip ripping hooksets. It's totally unnecessary and is disrespectful to the fish that are the core of the sport. 2 Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted June 23, 2014 Super User Posted June 23, 2014 If you have bad technique and snap your wrist too quick while you are pitching, a bad case of tennis elbow can happen. You can get a strap that tightens down on your fore arm that stops the pain for the most part. Alieve helps somewhat also. The only thing that cures it is rest. When I pay attention to good technique and don't try to horse it or pitch too far, I don't get tennis elbow. Quote
bmlum415 Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 1.5 ounces of tungsten makes a nice hole in the side of a fiberglass boat, even worse is when a sharp miller punching weight comes flying at you. Not fun.... Quote
Big239Fish Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 Got hit freakishly close to the "sensitive area" with a 1.25oz tungsten about 3 months ago when I set the hook on what I thought was a huge bite... I now twist my body a bit when I set the hook and make darn sure it's a bite before I do. Quote
starcraft1 Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 Sliced my thumb open with the point of the hook once, spit and duct tape, back to work! Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted June 24, 2014 Super User Posted June 24, 2014 Always wear wrap around glasses when fishing. Though rare, accidents can certainly happen. Hook sets don't usually line up the lure with the angler, but it can happen. Braid makes it a bit better, heavy mono is the worst. I have seen and have had heavy salt water jigs bounce off the coconut. Recently a salt water angler killed himself while fishing from a rock jetty when a bank sinker that was snagged hit him in the head. Quote
DILLY07 Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 I had EcoPro Tungsten hit me in the leg and left me a heck of a cool bruise. Stung like crazy. Quote
