BassinNCstyle Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 I didn't realize there was a 50 and a 200 series. From what I understand the 50 is for light line and lures, which I didn't know. I have been using it for spinnerbaits/chatter bait with 17lb Cajun line. It has me wondering if I am using to heaving of stuff for the reel? How would reel perform to let me know I do have to heavy line and lure on it? Thanks! Quote
TrippyJai Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 The 200 size holds more line and the 50 size will cast lighter lures better. Pretty much it. Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted June 17, 2014 Super User Posted June 17, 2014 performs great. that reel has no troubles at all /w heavy 20# fluoro or 65# braid /w jigs/frogs/trigs w/e. it's only limit is its line capacity. Quote
Cgrinder Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 200 seems to cast a 1/2 oz. Frog a little better for me. Maybe ten or fifteen feet further. The 50 can go very light with the right rod. Nice weightless plastics reel without breaking the bank. Pitches nicely, too. Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted June 17, 2014 Super User Posted June 17, 2014 The 50/51 series reels fit you're hand very nicely, also they are as durable as a200.... If you feel like the reel is under powered? You may want to step up to a 200...supposedly you can throw a 1/4 oz crank with it... I can't! Not of useful distance. Quote
bass1980 Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 Once upon a time I questioned the 50's ability but no more. The 50 can do anything the 200 can and more! The only limiting factor is the line capacity but it still holds plenty especially if using small diameter braid. The other difference is I believe the handle is shorter on the 50 so it may feel a bit less powerful on resistance bait. IMO and many people I know, the 50 is smoother of the two. The 50 cast better with light lures and even IMO heavy lures. I was going to make a thread to give props on the 50 but decided not to. With all these new Shimano reels coming out the 50 kind of got forgotten. I had mine sitting without a rod for a while. After adding hedgehog bearings and trying it out as my shallow diving crank reel I'm in love again! This reel cast amazing with 3/8oz and even lighter shad raps. Even threw some 1/2oz jigs and it was amazing. No wonder I won't sell the reel. Once Shimano comes with a 50 Curado I I'm all over it. 1 Quote
John G Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 Once Shimano comes with a 50 Curado I I'm all over it.According to Bantam 1, this is not likely. There are still plenty of 50 size Shimano's' out there and I plan on getting another Scorpion XT1000 before they are gone. This is what Bantam 1 said about the 50 There is a huge portion of the market using 15, 17 and 20 pound line. The small reels will not hold enough line. We have tried to push the braided line to FC leader for the applications, but the majority of people are slow to change. The small reels are not gone, but we probably will not see any changes in the near future. 2 Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted June 17, 2014 Super User Posted June 17, 2014 Yea... It would be sweet to see it tuned a bit... However... The curado I is pretty close to the palmability of the 50.. Quote
