Super User ChrisD46 Posted June 13, 2014 Super User Posted June 13, 2014 For those of you with a little "Jimmy Houston inside" - describe your spinnerbait styles , colors and tactics you use for summer time bass ? ...Slow roll a big single blade thumper over the bottom at night ? Lift and drop over grass ? Or just chunk and wind hoping to locate bass ? Let's hear from you ! Quote
timsford Posted June 13, 2014 Posted June 13, 2014 I use spinnerbaits during the summer at night with a big thumper blade. My lakes get a lot of fishing and pleasure boaters and almost everyone is throwing spinnerbaits or cranks. I try to fish mostly at night during the summer but if i do throw one during the day ive caught some really good stringers fishing 1 ounce plus spinnerbaits on deep structure where everyone else throws cranks or carolina rigs 1 Quote
Frenchman83 Posted June 13, 2014 Posted June 13, 2014 Sunny = white and chartreuse Overcast= purple and silver or black and silver. Either run on the tops of weeds or along the deep side of a weed bed. Quote

Super User smalljaw67 Posted June 13, 2014 Super User Posted June 13, 2014 There are multiple ways to fish my favorite bait but there is one tactic that works in summer and when it is on it can be more exciting than topwater. I'm talking about surface burning or bulging a spinnerbait. This is a tactic that is killer on river smallmouth and the strikes are violent and it is often the only way to get them to hit it, pure reaction strike. Another summer tactic is the "rip and kill", it is done over top of weeds and you basically get it caught in the weeds and rip it free and let it fall and repeat. Quote
Brian6428 Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 My current summer spinnerbait tactics are as follows: 1. Grab scissors. 2. Cut spinnerbait from line. 3. Place in tackle box until next spring. I have no luck on spinnerbaits in the summer or fall! I will stay tuned in to this thread to see what others have to say. 1 Quote
jtharris3 Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 I fish spinnerbaits in the spring, summer, and fall. It's all dependent on the type of cover that I have to fish on a particular day. My go to colors are white with gold blades, white/chartreuse with nickel blades, and white/chartreuse/blue with gold blades. I almost always throw Terminator spinnerbaits. On the rare occasion that I throw a different brand I have Strike King, Booya, and War Eagle to go to. I like to target any tree lay downs in the water. If a lake has willow trees that's all the better. Other key areas for me are the edges of Lilly pad fields, reed edges, and grass areas. I'll work those areas generally with a steady retrieve at a moderate pace. If the bass are hitting well that day I know I can increase my speed a bit. Probably my least used retrieve style is slow rolling. If the fish are deeper I'll usually switch to a type of bait more appropriate for fishing deeper. One other key area that I like to use a spinnerbait is at a creek mouth that comes into the lake. I like to pay particular attention to what I call the corners of the inlet. I also see a lot of people who fish spinnerbaits too fast. If I see what I believe to be a good spot that should hold fish I'll generally makes several casts into that area before moving on. I've had many occasions where a fish will come out and hit the spinnerbait on the fourth or fifth cast on a piece of cover. Quote
Super User ChrisD46 Posted June 15, 2014 Author Super User Posted June 15, 2014 I appreciate the replies - Spring perhaps is the best time to throw a spinnerbait however there is something about a 3/8th oz. Colorado / Willow Leaf / White and Chartreause spinnerbait that inspires confidence due to it's versatility . Even if I don't catch anything - just throwing one working an area of water is nice , relaxing and just the right pace to always be fun to work ! Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted June 16, 2014 Super User Posted June 16, 2014 If there is chop in the water I will burn it pretty fast this time of year, especially early in the morning or on overcast days. If that doesn't work I will slow roll in deeper water. I think in summer it's best to start fast early and if that doesn't work, end low and slow. Quote

Actually my bro did pretty good on a white Terminator 1/2 ounce spinnerbait today. I caught a few the other day on the same lure. Sadly my bro lost the lure on about a 2lbs bass at the boat. I've had that spinnerbait for like 5 years. I've used spinnerbaits all year long. Didn't realize you weren't supposed to use it the summer. lol. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted June 16, 2014 Super User Posted June 16, 2014 I let it sink to the bottom and slow roll it in. Quote
robster80 Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 i never have much luck with spinnerbaits. ill keep tryin em tho Quote
