I am interested in learning to throw a cast net, to be used to catch shiners.  I borrowed a large net (10 foot), and can barely pick it up, much less throw it.  While all the videos make it look easy, it doesn't come easy to me.

I would appreciate any suggestions as to size, manufacturer, etc.  Thanks,

Get a smaller net, one that you can pick up... there are youtube videos on this subject, check them out.

Youtube the correct procedure. It's impossible to explain without showing you. There's a very specific way to throw a Castnet so you can effectively open it like an umbrella when it hits the water. After that it's all practice practice practice practice practice. It can be a very very frustrating learning process so don't give up on it.

the big net is gonna be hard to learn with. i started learning with an 8 footer, made a few good throws, but still i need lots more practice. now we have a 5 foot net thats much easier to throw. i use them off the dock at smith mountain lake. at night i will have a spot light shining on the water, the light draws in baitfish, havent caught any shad yet, but plenty of alewives that i use for catfish, stripers, and bass. you have to get good rotation of the waist and upperbody. and when you throw it, having timing down is important.

My first try I forgot to have it tied to my wrist and threw the whole shebang into Sebastian inlet in Florida in front of a crowd. very embarrassing - get some instructions first.
