Nostalgia

Now that I reached half a century of age out of nowhere these thoughts have been appearing in my mind on a regular basis, I don´t know if it´s nostalgia of "the good old days" which depending upon who you ask will be the 40´s, 50´s, 60´s, 70´s and so. Born in the 60´s, I grew up on the 70´s and finally was a product of the 80´s. I don´t remember a lot of things of the 70´s, the truth is that one thing I really remember about the 70´s is disco music which I absolutely hated and still hate, I´m a rock n´roll guy.

 

Today is a "special" day because I have to take my mother to her monthly visit to the doctor, one of the things we do is after the doctor has seen her I take her for lunch, her monthly matineé because she doesn´t go anywhere during the rest of the month, she doesn´t want to eat anything fancy, a burger, a Subway sandwich. and then this thought surfaces speaking about the burgers.

 

With the exception of a year here or several months there I´ve lived most of my life in Mexico, until 1985 things that you and I take for granted now were completely alien for the vast majority of the mexican people, only for people living on the border or for us "priviledged" capable of traveling to the US having a McDonald´s or Burger King burger was an impossibilty ( oh yeah, a real "delicacy" ).

 

So you may ask, what do them kind of burgers mexicans ate ? well, we chilangos ( "chilango" is the nickname given to those born or those who have lived for a long period of time in Mexico City ) ate these:

Those were the burgers I had during my childhood years. So what happened ? McDonald´s and Burger King happened. Btw, we did have KFC ( a couple of restaurants in Mexico City ) and Pizza Hut ( the only one I can remember was on Av Insurgentes, half a block away from the paint academy I went ).

BTW, My favorite chain burgers are Steak 'n Shake and Sonic.

I'm knocking on the half century door and know exacty what you mean. Nostalgia for me was growing up and having taco night usually one Saturday a month. It was a fav of mine. I think what made it special was, everyone in the family had a job in the preparation of the meal. It was a lot of fun to do as a kid.

Just hit that milestone myself! Personally, nothing beats a home made burger!

Thinking back, time machine mode, I always remember Sunday night tv. Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom and then Disney- those were the days!!

Oh yes, I concur about the homemade burger, charcoal grilled please. My wife and I were having that discussion a couple of months ago. We are not fast food consumers, fast food is more like "don´t do anything" kind of thing so it´s usually reserved for Sundays. One Sunday my wife asked me if I could go and purchase some burgers after I got home at mid day, there´s a Burger King about 3 blocks from our home, she specifically told me to get just the burgers, "yes, sir ! " so I got to BK, purchased 3 Whoppers and a Whopper Jr ( for my daughter ) and took them home, when I arrived the aroma of something frying reached my nostrils, entered the house and saw my wife frying french fries ( she makes wonderful french fries ), so I ask her what was the purpose of purchasing burgers if she was going to work cutting the fries and cooking them ! if we are going to work preparing the meal at least we can prepare a "real burger" , lighting the charcoal to cook 4 burgers isn´t rocket science.

 

Some of my favorite TV shows: The 6 million dollar man ( remember that one ? ), Daktari, the Loony Tunes, the Flintstones, incredibly we had some shows that probably many didn´t see in the States like Dr Who and several Japanese shows like Ultraman, Megaman and Astroboy.

Raul I might be younger. As I was born in 85. I recall seeing many of the american shows in reruns. I even have seen old astroboy cartoons a few times growing up. Dr who is now shown in America. It is on bbc America. PLus my local pbbs station caries it on saturday. I have heard of ultraman also. The only megamen I know is a videogame.

Happy Birthday Raul!  Hope everything is going well for your Mom and the rest of the family too.

 

Going back in time, I can't help but think of a little family restaurant we used to take my grandmother to on Sundays after church.  The Danish Kitchen was famous for the "country-style" chicken dinners they served every Sunday.  Everybody at the table started with an empty plate, and all the food came on a platter or in a bowl.  Dang that was good food!  It was even worth the ride in the country afterwards with Grandma riding in the middle of the back seat between us two boys.  We always got the lecture as we drove by some old abandoned farm that this was the kind of place we could look forward to living in if we didn't finish our schooling.
