Spiderwire stealth braid 15lb. test. I had a custom terminator spinnerbait whith a huge white blade and was bulging it. Bam 3lb even smokes it. A few casts later I cast off my lure, however there is still some line floating in the water and i am able to retrieve it. Tie the fish catching lure on again and cast, this time it breaks closer to the lure and its gone into the muck forever. So i tie on another lure (secret) and cast that thing off to. Im losing my patience at this point. So I strip off half my spool and tie on another lure, and didn't have any more line related problems that evening.

This braid i spooled on before this season. Its been on for a decent amount of casts, but im not even half way thru the season. There wasn't any obvious signs of degeneration and it wasn't tangling much. Usually braid will tangle before it snaps as it ages. So should i be changing line more often? Is spiderwire stealth not a good line? Help appreciated.

Just a thought, you may want to check your rod, for chipped or cracked guide inserts, it is possible that your line is being cut.

Nothing wrong with my casting rod guides.

I had my 12 lb p line break the other day. Was t rigging a Berkeley worm and had pulled in a few dinks. Little later I tossed to the outside of some brush. Felt a hit and watched my line start moving. Went to set the hook and the d**n line failed right above the knot. Had tied a Palomar on it too. Maybe I tied it wrong? Just started using that knot recently.

An hour or so before that I was tossing a little 1/8th beetle spin on my ultra lite and had caught a couple nice crappie. Few casts later felt a strike and went to set the hook and the knot itself outright failed. Was using a Palomar on that rig too. Couldn't believe it didn't fail on the 1lb plus crappie I was catching before so.

Sorry I don't have any advice to offer just thought I would share some misfortune of my own to maybe make you feel better. Haha.

Thats been happening to me a lot recently with berkley vansih flourcarbon. I lost 3 fish plus tackle yesterday before I did a google search.  Apparently flourocarbon (and sounds like p line) breaks very easily at the knot. KNots must be tied perfectly and lubricated so the line doesnt pinch itself.  All my fish were lost on hook sets.

op:

I have lost a few fish in a single day using braid as well.  Turns out I was missing the ceramic insert in the last guide. It was like a knife. I didnt notice until I got home.

Is there any other way to cut braid?  Seems like it would need something to actually cut it. If its not getting snagged, the only thing that could be is your rod, reel or lure.

There may be more to your situation than meets the eye. Hard to say exactly why your braid failed. Hookset, rod, age, fraying, other stuff?

I caught my PB with 10lb Fireline on a bait caster along with a 10lb leader. My PB was 7 ½ pounds brought in with a thick salad wrapped around her, maybe an additional pound to two pounds added.

I use Power Pro, that flirt with Fireline was brief, but I still have it on a spinning spool. I use 10lb PP for spinning applications (+leader), and 20lb PP (+leader) for bait casting.

So perhaps changing out your braid will give you a new perspective. Use PowerPro, or Sufix, or whatever suits your fancy when you go purchase. Not all braids are equal, and I've settled on PP for my needs. Others will choose differently.

15 lb test braid is about 4 lb test diameter in monofilament so, it's got the abrassion resistance of a hair.

Hey man thanks for the info!

I have 12lb sauger red label on my other rig and have yet to have that happen on that. The ultra lite still perplexes me. Then again that line is getting kind of old. But it also happened with a clinch knot I tied.

There could be a multitude of reasons but before you dismiss the guide insert have a crack, give it a quick check with a Q-Tip. As already mentioned, 15lb braid is thin so a slight crack will cause the line to fray and break. Run the cotton end of the Q-Tip around the entire guide, if there is a crack you'll notice it really quick as the cotton will grab, you'd be surprised on how small the cracks can be, you may not even see them until you know right where they are.

I think I figured out what is causing breakoffs with flouro.

When tying your knot, you have to make sure there is zero friction when cinching the knot.  If I felt friction when pulling the knot tight, the line would break when I would pull on it while holding the bait in the other hand. No friction, no break.

I lubricate the knot and eye of the bait and pull slowly and evenly. I have found that the Clinch knot holds better than the improved" clinch knot. I assume because omitting the last step reduces friction.

I took the Vaanish off all my rods and leaders. I could not get the line straight, too much memory. Twist was uncontrollable even with swivels. Add the hypersensitivity to break offs at the knot and that was it. I bought p-line instead. It is much softer and I had zero breakoffs.  It has more stretch and less sensitivity than straight flouro but it is much easier to deal with,

That is clearly a common cause of (secret). You have to watch out for it or it'll get ya.

I'm just messing with you, man. Try out 50lb Power Pro braid. Ive had it on for a year with no complaints.
