Super User Lund Explorer Posted May 24, 2014 Super User Posted May 24, 2014 No Raider, you aren't getting anything. Just a friendly reminder that no matter how old you are, there's somebody that is going to have to pick up the pieces if your account here goes silent before you get one. I've had the pleasure (?) of spending the last week acting as the executor for my recently passed former Son-in-Law, and will be enjoying this holiday weekend and the next few months trying to figure out everything that could have been done with a simple will. Even if you don't think you have much, it doesn't cost much to use a simple online will and having it recorded at the county court house. At least not nearly as much as paying a retainer to a law firm. The $2,000 I just spent could have bought a lot of soft plastic. The Bottom Line - Let your relatives always remember you for how good a fisherman you were(or liar as the case may be), and not by the epic cat fight that ensued after you're gone. Get A Will! Quote
Chief 2 Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 Good advice. Had an Aunt die in California with no will and only myself and my sisters as next of kin. She had a decent amount of $$ in her estate. Took almost 4 years and plenty of grief from The State of California before we got it settled. A good bit of $$ went to attorneys. Quote
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted May 24, 2014 Super User Posted May 24, 2014 Great advice. My wife and I did it years ago. You can find "boilerplate" wills online that make it as simple as a "fill in the blanks" with names, items, amounts, etc. Lund, we've been there, and done that when our son-in-law passed away a few years ago. Actually, it was our daughter that was saddled with that unpleasant task. Student loans, and other financial obligations, some she was not aware of had to be dealt with. In addition to coping with the loss, she had to deal with the mess he left behind. I don't use the term mess in a perjorative sense. When there is no will, all the loose ends that must be dealt with is a messy task. Quote

Super User SirSnookalot Posted May 24, 2014 Super User Posted May 24, 2014 If moving to another state you should get a new will made up, plus a durable power of attorney for health care or similar document. In Florida ours $350. 1 Quote

Tom, I have told several people already that this reminds me of a scavenger hunt without the list of things to find handed to you at the start. My only saving grace is that the State of Michigan has very specific regulation as to what has to be done and in what order. Some of the relatives aren't real happy with that, but I've told them all that my hands are tied. Their only option is to lawyer up and watch the estate head towards insolvency which would defeat the purpose in the end. It is the first day of the "real" bass fishing season here today, and I will be spending most of it searching for values to personal property for the inventory. The rest of it will be spent keeping my diary up to date of all the things done for the estate. I sure hope all of the other Michiganders stick a few slobs for me! Quote
