I'm looking to order some hinged/swinging football jigs for creature baits. Apparently these are few and far between. I've only found one for purchase actually and they are Gene Larew Biffle Hardhead jigs.

I see they come in many sizes.

Hook:        Weight:

3/0              3/16

4/0              5/16

4/0              7/16

4/0              11/16

6/0              1 oz.

My questions are:

1.) What other brand heads of this style are out there?

2.)  Are there any out there that you can just pick up at big box stores like Cabelas or Gander rather than ordering?

3.) Where can I purchase these heads?

4.) What size should I get these heads in?

I mainly fish lakes in the Twin Cities of Minnesota for largemouth.

The Biffle Hard Heads are readily available at "big box" retailers as well as local tackle shops. They should not be hard to find.

Strike King just released a version as well, their version has Trokar hooks.   I like the SK's and the Biffle Heads, they can be purchased just about anywhere.  I use the 7/16 and 11/16 the most.

Look under the football jigs at TW, there are several brands.

Colors, just go black

Size, 3/8, 1/2, and 3/4oz. 4/0 or 5/0 hook.

Fish on a hard bottom, preferably with some sporadic weeds. On a Soft bottom it would not be my first or fiftieth choice.

What is the benefit of fishing a hinged vs traditional jig?

The biffle heads are pretty expensive for only 2 I have a guy here that pours them for me from the do it mold best jig alternative

What about a sand bottom with sporadic weeds?

I'd use a Texas rig or plastics on a weighted swimbait hook "rage rig". The football head will just dig into/up a bunch of junk.

I have very limited use so far this spring, but did manage a few fish.  Pretty much a hard bottom deal. The head will pick up leaves, weeds, etc. like a rake. But when used in the right locations, worked great.  I bought 5/16 and 7/16.  Plan on adding some 3/4 this fall.  Tom

One of my favorite methods to use when it gets slow or I just want to do something different. It doesn't catch a bunch for me, but it tends to catch nice ones. Chompers wobble heads are pretty good too.

Good to know.

I've looked at these type jigs for awhile now. I just don't see a difference between them and the Jika Rig. I think the Jika gives the plastic you are using more action and noise. Just a thought.

There is a difference but it requires you to work the bait differently. The pros are using this on slick, calm water with hard bottom, they actually use it like a crankbait by reeling steady while it is on the bottom. The faster you reel the heavier the head you need but it does work, the Jika rig is basically presenting a Texas rigged bait in the horizontal position.
