[Catch and Grease]

I fish a place in Georgia and its called rays mill pond and it is THICK THICK THICK with grass and hydrilla, I was wondering if anybody could give me some advice for fishing the really thick stuff and some types of lures y'all use in thick grass, about the only thing I can catch stuff out there with is a Texas rig or top water frog...

I tried jigs before but it seemed like almost every time it would get clogged with grass before getting back to the boat... I'll try em again though and see what happens

Vertical!

When fishing thick grass ya have to stay as close to vertical as ya can.

you really need to be an a canoe/kayak/boat to be productive punch weeds. and these fisheries are far easier and more productive off shore.

 

they will come to the surface and roam at night.  topwater should be good at night and dusk/dawn. if they aren't chasing top water during these times slow drag a senko thru the tops of weeds should do the trick  (put a bead on line and it will slide thru the weeds easier).

 

the only time i fish these places 'normal' is overcast, rain, wind or pre-frontal.  then i junk fish till i find what they are biting. if i don't have the weather on my side I don't waste my time with 90% of lures.  my pond has wall to wall weeds that either break the surface or leave very room for spinnerbaits etc.  it looks like pure frog heaven but they only work in ideal conditions or at night.  its very hard to get a decent fish to surface from 8 ft down in the cavern/tunnels.

There are days down here that punching through the matt will get the most and biggest bites.

Depending on the thickness of the mat rig a tungsten bullet weight (I've used from a 1/2 oz to 1 1/2 oz) to heavy braid ( 50# to 65# some folks go as high as 80#) Use a 7' to 8' (7' 6" is probably average) to a heavy/ fast or x fast rod. Rig a beaver type plastic bait, or something with minimal apendenges.

Flip or pitch right into it. If you're having a problem penetrating, swing the rod tip high and let the bait come in with a higher arc....

Experiment working the bait, dead stick it, shake it, hop it...

I Always bang the bait on the underside of the mat, and then letting it fall straight down before pulling it out for another pitch.

I do practice catch and release but I love me some Fried bass lol, if I go fishing and I want some fish later I'll keep at the most 1-2 (not large bass) and cook them and eat them the same day... But that's a little off topic don't ya think? Catch and grease I thought was just a neat name.
