I was looking at a new drop shot reel and wanted to try a pflueger. I like reels in the $100 range, so I thought the supreme mgx would be a good choice. However, with all of the great reviews for the President, I'm debating it. Is it worth the extra 40? Since it's more expensive, will it be noticeably better? Any feedback helps. Thanks

I've owned the President, Supreme MGX, and Supreme XT. Save your money and buy the President unless you just want the lightest reel possible, then get the XT.

I have fished with Pflueger spinning reels for a long time, they are a great value.  I have fished everything from the President to the Patriarch.  I like the President for its value, but the frame does have some flex in it.  Hold the reel by the stem  in one hand and lightly twist the reel from side to side with the other and you will see what I mean.   I  choose the Supreme MGX as the best value, the magnesium frame is worth the extra money to me.  The Patriarch is smoothest and lightest of the bunch and if you have the money, you will not regret the purchase.

President is great. The Sup Xt is nice too but not really worth the extra $. If you are going to buy a spinning reel in that upper price range the Stradic FJ is the only one that is worth it in my opinion.

So you seem to have a good handle on your spinning reels, why is the Pflueger Supreme XT not worth the money but the Stradic Fj is.   In your opinion why is the Stradic the better reel?

I will probably be in the minority here but I will never buy another President.  It sounded like a great reel when I bought it - $60, 10 bearings, lightweight.  It only lasted 3 months before the bail broke (about 200 hours of fishing).  And it sounded and felt "grindy" right out of the box.  I can't speak for other Pflueger models though.

Things break and go bad, no one makes a perfect product. It's what happens after the problem that makes a difference.

I bought a used Patriarch and the anti reverse went bad. I sent it in to have Pfluegar repair it. A few days later it came back with a note saying it was lubed. apparently I hadent explained the problem enough because it was not fixed. Sent it back again and they sent me a brand new reel!

Once again I buy a used patriarch from EBay. It was broken and missing parts but I got it for $60!

Sent it in and asked if they could either repair it or if it could trade it in on a different size patriarch. I told them the parts were lost...and gave them a number to call me with a repair price.

I never got a call to pay for a repair/replacement but I did get a NEW reel in the size I wanted

I've also had the same customer service from Lew's

I say it is not worth the extra money because when I pick up my President/Supreme I cannot tell which one is which until I look at the label (the spools are interchangeable). Why spend the extra $100.00? For that cool graphite handle and foam grip....?

With Shimano, the quality speaks for itself. Go look at resale value on ebay of the Stadic FG or FJ (or any older Shimano reel) and compare it to other brands resale value. Ive seen 10 year old FG's sell for over $100.00 multiple times.

But yeh, I'll be honest I prefer my Shimano casting and spinning reels when I am on the water. I love it all when I am in the shop playing with it but time and time again my Daiwa and Abu stuff end up back in the locker while my Curado's end up on the rods that are still on the deck.

You forgot to mention the magnesium frame and rotor vs graphite, the XT is about 1oz lighter, extra spool, sealed drag system, but your probably right they use the same size spool so that makes them the same.

I don't notice that stuff while I am actually fishing. But the extra spool is nice and worth mentioning.

We all look for different things in the reels we fish, some find the differences worth the price others can do without.  Myself, weight savings through the use of better materials and a smooth drag are things that I look for in most of the reels I use.

The president and some lures! It performs better than other spinning reels from other manufacturers that are twice as expensive.

Talking Pflueger, I did some bass fishing yesterday hadn't done it a while.  I was using my supreme 35, which was used 2 years for snook fishing in salt, I forgot how smooth this reel is.  I own 2 other supremes I like them equally as well.  In addition to my supremes I own an arbor which I use nearly everyday and medalist, both used in saltwater, none of the 5 Floogs have ever been serviced, a claim I cannot make regarding other mfgs.

Go to FFO. They have Xt's for $85 and MG's for $63. Yeah factory reconditioned but from what every one here says, you cant tell the difference between factory rebuilt and new and they carry the same warranty.

I used the supreme for I guess 7 or eight years and finally decided to try the Stradic cI4 two years ago.  Line twist is no longer a problem so last year I purchased the FJ series and I will not be switching back to pfluger because of the extreme line twist I've experienced using them.  I've been wanting a Patriach but would like to know whether line twist is a issue or not before buying one.  My advice is pick up the Shimano FJ 2500 series on sale if you can find it on sale.

i dont get all the line twist problems people seem to have. it rarely is ever a problem for me on ANY reel. so for me, its a non issue to begin with because i just havent experienced major or "extreme" line twist problems on any reel ever. and i fish a ton of drop shot too...

all i know is my 2 pfluegers have served me well and i will definitely buy more of them in the future, and will recommend them to anyone...

Common complaint by everyone I know that has owned a patriarch. Safe bet is to get the supreme xt.
