soopd Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 We have a high school club that has 10 members. We qualified 3 boats for the state tournament in 2 weeks. I have a points system setup and I have 4 anglers tied with the same amount of points. 2 of the anglers have fished more tournaments to accumulate their points. 2 anglers have fished less but they finished 1st in a regional tournament to accumulate most of their points. What is the fairest way to choose the anglers and coanglers? I am trying to be as fair as possible. Any ideas. Thanks Quote
ksboy Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 Not sure how you resolve this. I'd take a look at my point system to try and have tie breakers during the season if that would work. The club I fish with has a (paper) system of giving points for each fish caught being worth xx points, then the total of those determine the winner, second, third place. Each tourn is worth 25 pts to the winner and goes down one point to the last guy catching any qualifying fish. Anyone who catches no fish gets 10 pts for showing up. We rarely have a tie at the end of the season but if we do then the highest fish points (i.e. weight) is determined the angler of the year. I don't think it would be possible to have two guys catch the same weight for a year and end up with the same tourn points also. Back to your problem, you could have a shootout if you have time. From your post, it looks like 6 kids are tied. Have them fish for individual points for some amount of time, the top two or however many you can take to State would be the qualifiers. Hope this helps. If you are interested in learning more about our scoring system, send me a PM and we'll work something out to help. Quote
Bassintheweeds Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 Or you could use who ever caught the biggest lunker at your tournaments then those three qualify. I would approve the kids that showed up more, sure they may not have finished high but if you sat them you would be saying dedication counts for nothing. 1 Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted April 28, 2014 Super User Posted April 28, 2014 Have a shootout next weekend if possible. Top 3 are boaters bottom 3 are co-anglers. If that's not possible I'd go with seniority. Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted April 28, 2014 Super User Posted April 28, 2014 Who owns the boats you'll be using? That is something to consider. If one of the 4 has a dad or a grand dad, and you're using his boat, then the polite thing to do is to have that kid be an angler rather than co-angler. Other than that, I'd cast lots, draw names out of a hat, have a system with built in tie breakers next time. Quote
soopd Posted April 28, 2014 Author Posted April 28, 2014 I have 5 boat captains. The problem is we only qualified 3 boats for the state tournament. This is our first year and figuring things out as we go. I thought if you qualified in a regional tournament with 5 boats that is what you carried to state. However, they take the least amount of boats in any of the 3 regional tournaments you had to fish. I have 10 anglers. I can only use 6 in the state tournament. Based on the point system my top 2 boats are set. However, my 3rd and 4th boat tied with points based on how it's set up. 1 boat fished all the tournaments to accumulate their points. The other boat won a regional tournament My 5th boat did not accumulate enough points. If I use total weight as a tie breaker the boat that fished less but won a tournament goes. However, I do not want to discredit the fact the other students fished more. All the students who tied are 8th and 7th graders. I don't like to draw names because it has nothing to do with fishing. I thought about having a fish off between the 3rd and 4th boat. Winner gets to fish in state. Quote
soopd Posted April 28, 2014 Author Posted April 28, 2014 The way I did points was: Attendance to meetings -10 Fishing a tournament -25 Fishing a regional -50 Participating in Conservation Work -50 Having a guest speaker to teach -50 Finishing top 15 regional-25 Finishing top 10 regional-50 Finishing top 5 regional-75 Finishing 1st regional-100 Lunker in regional tournament -100 because this qualifies you for state Quote
CDMeyer Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 If you kept track of the fishes weight then go with the biggest bass Quote
jhoffman Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 Theres your problem your entire points system is based on 25 which is why you have this problem. Next year use odd numbers at some point. Id make it even simpler Attendance to meetings -1Fishing a tournament -2Fishing a regional - 5Participating in Conservation Work -3 (note this is higher than fishing a tournament on purpose)Having a guest speaker to teach -5Finishing top 15 regional-7Finishing top 10 regional-10Finishing top 5 regional-12Finishing 1st regional-50Lunker in regional tournament -5 because this qualifies you for state (getting into one good fish shouldnt automatically bump you to top dog, anyone can luck into a big fish) If I had three boats to go, the top 3 would be the "captain" and the remaining three spots would involve a fish off between everyone left. This gives the guy who struggled all season a chance to come back and win it all, a made for tv moment. Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted May 29, 2014 Super User Posted May 29, 2014 Total weight? Tiebreaker ? That's the answer now, like JHoffman suggest incorporating changes for next year will be you're friend. Quote
