buzzfrog Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 umm, hot deals at academy on All star rods, was looking at a one of those Tech specific rods. they had a MH moderate rod for swim jigs. I was always told by people I know and even forums I am on, on single hook lures you want Fast or XF to cross there eyes, well some dont set hook on spinnerbaits though Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted March 20, 2014 Super User Posted March 20, 2014 Depends on the style of swim jig (north vs south) and the style of hook. You could in theory get away with a moderate rod as long as it isnt glass using braid for a northern style swim jig because of the lighter hooks. A sweeping hookset or just a reel set is more efficient hookset with swim jigs than a swing for the fence approach. A moderate action doesnt have the power to drive big hooks home on certain swim jigs. You are also fishing swim jigs through cover and weeds. You need, not necessarily a meat stick, but something with a solid backbone. I would personally pass on the rod unless it was mis labeled and is fast instead of moderate. I prefer a fast action, hated xf. Quote
Super User Jrob78 Posted March 20, 2014 Super User Posted March 20, 2014 I wouldn't use what I consider to be MH M for swim jigs but there is no industry standard. What one company labels as a MH M swim jig rod might not be anything close to what they would label as MH M crankbait rod. Quote
buzzfrog Posted March 20, 2014 Author Posted March 20, 2014 i might go with another rod then, my swim jig rod is now my rod to gain confidence in chatter/bladed jigs. I still do want a swim jig tied on though Quote
TorqueConverter Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 All my swim jig fish are barely hooked in the corner of the mouth. They're not hooked like more normal jig fish at all. I think a rod with a bit softer and slower tip could be good for swim jigs. You might be on to something there. Quote
mjseverson24 Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 I think the MH/M would work fine for swim jigs, as long as it is not too slow of an action, I like mine to have some tip action, but still enough shutdown power to pull them out of the junk... Mitch Quote
Megastink Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 I think moderate is too limp. I throw northern swim jigs and I toss them on a medium, fast Duckett. Same rod I throw jerk baits on. Quote

Delaware Valley Tackle Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 This one depends on the actual power and back bone of the rod. A mod action isn't necessarily limp, but I'd be leaning more toward a fast or Mod-fast blank if I were building a swim-jig / spinner bait rod. 1 Quote
