I have 2 black max reels that I started out with. They are good reels for the price. I can't say much for the rods. I've never used one.

The baitcasting combo seems legit.  I'm not a huge fan of purely magnetic brakes when non Diawa (such as the Black Max) but that price is good as long as the rod isn't completely worthless.  $50 is normal retail for the Black Max and other reels using the same parts/architecture.  At this low price point, doubling your budget to $100 can get you a better rod/reel combo, especially at sale pricing.  If $50 is your budget then I don't see how you can go wrong with either combo.

Thanks, i am looking for a baitcaster and a spinning rod combo with a price range up to $100 each to get started. From doing some reading on here seems i need a rod for cranbaits , one for soft plastics, and one for lighter baits. There are a lot of options out there and i am trying to weed through the all. I would love to buy all three for around $200 or less.

Check around. The veritas combos just got marked down to around $80 if I recall seeing it correctly.

Although I have Abu and Pflueger reels, none are those models.  However, I have read plenty of comments on here from others stating that they both are good reels for the money.  No idea about the rods.  At those prices you could use the rods for awhile until you can afford better, and then throw them away without losing any money.  :teeth:  Or throw them in the trunk in case you come across a place to fish when your other gear isn't with you.

Yes i to have read some good things snout both reels but nothing about the rods. But i think i will indeed buy both and upgrade the rods later. Now i need to figure which models. I see they have power listed but not tip action. I guess they would be about the same for each model maybe.

Bavass good is a relative term. I have used many entry level combos over the years, although not this one. I have come to understand that spending a little more is a better value long-term. Short-term this combo will likely work good enough as long as you understand that the reel will not stay smooth with much use, and the rod will be heavier and less sensitive than you may find acceptable in the future. Good luck, and welcome to bass fishing!

Thanks! Do you have any suggestions for under $100 to start out with? Or maybe a one all around rod & reel for about $150 and just get one rod instead of two?

Believe it or not I have a black max but most of my reels are pq's and lews tournament and that black max will outcast them I don't know how or why but I can put that on the same rod same bait and zing it out about 10yards farther other than that I really don't like the reel it just doesn't balance well on my rods but for the price it's a good reel and if I was on a budget Id buy them .... That being said u can pick up pro qualifiers on bass pro website right now 69bucks a steal they r great reals love there drag . My favorite is lews tournament tho I'm slowly switching all my reels over to them I've got 9 pq's left to swap out

I have seen a lot of posts on the PQ's most people love them. I am really looking for something to start with see what I like etc... and then start upgrading this winter. The reels and rods I have now are just really old and never had a good combo with any ot the rods I have so I am just going to go new. Then maybe I can figure out something to do with the old stuff I have. This is what I have now. I will check out the Lew's. Thats another one I see a lot people love!
