FrankW Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 I tried SS8 in 20lb on a Daiwa Procaster Z. I have had this reel since 2000 and know how to cast it. I had a problem with the SS8 backlashing. Not a lot but just enough that I had to pull out a few feet way to often. I finally took the line off and put on some regular PP. When I bought my Tatula R I loaded it with PP and it casted great. After a few weeks I decided to try the SS8 on the Tatula as it casted a lot better than my old Procaster. I immediately had the same problems with the SS8 as I did before. The SS8 feels almost sticky to me and it just had a tendency to backlash too often. I think the problem is the finish that PP is using on the SS8 line. I have decided not to use it on a bait caster. I really wanted to like the SS8 line but it didn't perform for me. Frank 1 Quote
Super User Tywithay Posted March 5, 2014 Super User Posted March 5, 2014 Not a braid fan, but I do have a Tatula spooled with some Cabela's Ripcord8 and I like it better than both Power Pro and Super Slick. I had good luck with Samurai, 832, and FX2 in the past and the Ripcord8 is right up there with them. Plus, Cabela's has sales all the time. The stuff just came out and I already bought it for 20% off a few weeks ago. Made in the USA too, if that matters to anyone. Quote
michang5 Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 Thanks for this report, FrankW. I've long debated whether to switch my preferred SS8 to my Tatula. I will stick with my Seaguar Red Label fluoro. mnbassman23 Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 Another vote for the regular PP. Wasn't a fan of the Superslick. Quote
livetofish28 Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 I also like regular power pro but have spooled up a reel with sunline sx1 and have been impressed Tight lines Andrew Quote
0119 Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 I hate braid. I hate braid so much that when I was getting ready for a dream trip to Lake Istopogka I was dreading buying the braid I knew I'd have to use for all the pads. I was going to toss the braid as soon as the trip was done because I hate braid so much. So i wanted to go on the cheap if possible. I got regular power pro even though I knew all the bad experiences saltwater anglers report on floridasportsman forum. I got a spool of Spiderwire Stealth and a spool of PPSS8. I used each one on my trip. Just like others reported on the other forum, the original power pro broke easy. The spiderwire didn't break but fuzzed up and looks like twine. Both bleed so bad my reels and rod seats were green as if from algae in the water. But it was the line, now nearly white. The SuperSlick8 stayed close to original color and kept its slick coat. None of the reels spooled with it had any green residue on them. I still hate braid but the super slick was transferred to my spinning reels and is worth keeping. The other 2 are just a trip expenditure! Quote

I would suggest you try SS8 on your Tatula and see what happens. I may have had an isolated problem and I would like to hear your comments after you use it. Particularly if you use the 20lb line. I used the 20lb SS8 on the Tatula for fishing sweet beavers with a skirt and 1/8oz weight. The Tatula handles this setup really well and I pitch with it all the time in shallow water but with standard PP. Frank Quote

I have used braid since 2000 and have never experienced the bleeding problem you described. The color does come off but it is over time and I only notice the color being lost. I think you will be pleased with how the braid works on your spinning reels. What line do you use for jigging and punching? Frank Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted March 6, 2014 Super User Posted March 6, 2014 I'm in Florida as well, I use nothing but braid with the exception of 2 saltwater setups. I mainly use original PP with no real issues, I've tried other brands as well and the same story. At present I have 1 light set up with PPslick, 10# test that I use for pond fishing and peacock bass, it seems to work just fine and windknots do pull thru much easier. If anything about braid regardless of brand is an excessive amount of windknots for me. I actually get more in freshwater fishing, I do have my theories on why. Frank W, I see you are a fairly new member, people that have read my posts know I use spinning for 100% of my fishing both fresh and salt and, heaviest braid I use is 20#. Quote
FrankW Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 Hi Warrior, Yes I am new to the forum but not to Bass fishing. I also use a spinning rod a lot. I had wind knots, lure fouling and line wrapping around the tip with 10lb braid. Those problems went away when I moved up to 20lb braid. I love braid but it does funny stuff when the wind blows. I think you will be pleased with how the braid works on your spinning reels. What line do you use for jigging and punching? Frank Almost all the water I fish in Florida is gin clear or tannic. Visibility of braid is a factor I cannot get over, let alone tons of other negatives I see with braid. But most importantly I fish a combination of wood and marl (sort of like prehistoric coral) rock. Braid has the poorest abrasion resistance of any line. It cannot even stand up to the gill covers of a snook or the mouth of a tarpon. Both species that occupy my bass waters. Other than use on a spinning reel to avoid memory or twist, I see braid as only a negative. Quote
michang5 Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 I swung by local Walmart today to pick up a ship-to-store order of 300yds of 15# PP S8S yellow braid. No local stores carry it and the WM price was quite a bit cheaper. I'm eager to see of it is a good compromise between the 10# and 20# braid I'm currently using on my two different spinning reels. Con: I've experienced more than a couple of wind knots on the 10#, the worst being when I'm breaking off a snag and the line flies back toward me. I've never had a wind knot that required cutting on the 20#. Pro: Granted I'm using different sizes reels and different rods, but I can cast the 10# much farther than the 20#. FrankW, I just might recycle the 20# that is currently on my spinning reel onto my Tatula for a test. Ooh... That's a smart and economical idea. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted March 8, 2014 Super User Posted March 8, 2014 Can't say I never had braid wrap around my tip but it doesn't happen to me very often. I don't notice any significant casting difference between 10-15 and 20#, maybe a little bit. These windknots can be a nightmare and I got a lot of them. Less in saltwater and my theory is I'm using heavier lures (exceed the max rod wt. all the time), I do believe the line comes off the reel straighter and doesn't hit the first guide as often, that's where the windknots happen. Don't forget braid still gets twist on retrieve by being wrapped around a fixed spool, that can cause the knots too. I agree with 0119 about the abrasion from fish, rocks, coral, cement pylons, etc. I do lots of respooling, I like braid so it's worth it to me. Quote
War Eagle 44 Posted March 9, 2014 Posted March 9, 2014 I know lots of guys think this is just "marketing hype" but the newer Shimano reels with the Line Propulsion Spool Lip design really are head and shoulders better than reels without it with regards to wind knots. I have an older Sahara that was a great reel with mono or fluoro but a nightmare with braid. If I tried to get any distance on my casts using braid on that reel wind knot city. I picked up a Sedona FD 2500 to use on the rod I'd been using the Sahara on and I've not had another wind knot since. I have a Stella, Stradic, Symetre, and the Sedona all with the Propulsion Lip design and I can't remember a single wind knot using them. I know some guys don't particularly like Shimano gear and that's fine, I'm not trying to say they're superior to all the other brands in every way I'm simply saying in this one instance they definitely got it right. Super User SirSnookalot Posted March 9, 2014 Super User Posted March 9, 2014 I agree with War Eagle, I get winds knots all the time, must have 6-8 or them in a couple hours yesterday. I've never had a wind knot with my stradics, spheros' and daiwas. Despite other issues I have with Shimano reels, I'm actually leaning in the direction of a new stradic 4000. Quote
