So, Im planning my next set up, and it will be a dedicated jog rod (1/4-3/8 oz jigs with occasional 1/2oz football), with maybe some medium weight (3/8-1/2 tungsten) C-Rig back up use. It's going to be a DX, Full Handled rod, so lets not start with the Loomis, St Croix, et al suggestions if we can help it!

Its between these two rods, and it will have a core 100mg7 mounted on it. I have no issues with longer rods at all, I actually prefer them most of the time. I throw a lot of 3/8oz brush jigs with Rage Craw trailers. Secondary use would be deep water footballs (1/2 oz) with Rage Craws or Lobsters and deep water C-Rigging (3/8-1/2 oz) with 7-10" worms. But Id guess that 80% of this rods life will have a jig and craw tied to 15 lb flouro leader and 50lb braid.

Anyone have experience with either or both of these rods used for these applications?

Thanks guys

Drew

I have a DX744c FH.  Pairs up nice with either a Chronarch E or Zillion.  For anything under 3/4 oz., it's my go to.  It seems best in that 3/8 to 1/2 oz. range, though I also like it for Ragetail craws on a 1/4 oz. Jika rig. Another oddball use I've found that I really like it for is 1/3 oz. spoons for browns, steelhead, and coho.

I have both and use both.

My opinion would be go with the 784ML... it is a awesome jig rod. I have thrown anywhere from 1/4 oz jigs+trailer to 1/2 jigs+trailer... I throw flutter spoons on it too. In fact I have even thrown spinnerbaits.

It is really one of my favorites in the line, and one of Dobyns best sellers. The extra lenght is nice, and I am looking for a reason to use it when I can.

the tip on the 784ML will be faster than the 744.

for your intended use and preferences I go with the 784ML without a doubt.

As much as I love my DX744 the DX784ML just seems to suit what your looking to do better. This was my first season fishing the DX784ML and I found the extra length allows me take up extra line and get control of big fish at the side of the boat. I used it mostly for dragging heavy football jigs in deep water. If you were strictly going to use it as a pitching rod I would stick with the DX744, but if fishing footballs/C-rigs the DX784ML is the stick for you. I will mention that it is noticeably faster the the DX744, it really should be rated as xfast.

I've got both rods and for your application I'd use the 784ml for deep water jigs. On hooksets you take up more line and the action is perfect for jigs.

784ml would be the way to go..

I just caught my PB 2 weeks ago throwing the football jig as thats all I use the rod for and its been on heck of a rod for me since Dobyns came out with it...

Which did you end up getting and what are your thoughts? I am debating the same two rods.

Is skipping significantly harder with the 784 than the 744?

You do realize that the thread is a year old?

Yes, a 7'4" rod isn't easy to skip with, the 7'8" rod would even more difficult.
