bolivier Posted October 14, 2013 Posted October 14, 2013 Pretty excited about this one. Caught it today, Sunday. Around 3 o'clock on a blue/chrome red eye shad. Should have weighed it but I didn't. I'm guessing 3 lbs, i dunno. Is this a fairly good size white bass or do they get way bigger. Just really getting into all of this seriously. On to the pics... 2 Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted October 14, 2013 Super User Posted October 14, 2013 Not sure of the lake you were on, but Midwest City is not to far from me and the Hybrids get pretty good sized around here. Hefner, 2 years ago, had a huge growth of them. They would hit anything on the surface. My largest was just over 5 but most ranged around 2-3. They fight like a small mouth bass too. Its not a LM, but they are a blast to catch! Nice catch! Quote
bolivier Posted October 14, 2013 Author Posted October 14, 2013 I was on Wes Watkins reservoir. Do you think it's a hybrid? Quote
bolivier Posted October 14, 2013 Author Posted October 14, 2013 Why did this get moved to the "other fish species" forum? Is this not a bass??? Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted October 14, 2013 Global Moderator Posted October 14, 2013 Why did this get moved to the "other fish species" forum? Is this not a bass??? It's actually a temperate bass while largemouth, smallmouth, and spots are in the sunfish family. Just looking at it that fish does look like a white bass more than a wiper to me but it's impossible to be 100% sure just by looking at them. http://tnfish.org/PhotoGalleryFish_TWRA/FishPhotoGallery_TWRA/pages/TemperateBassKeyNegus_jpg.htm Quote
Super User slonezp Posted October 14, 2013 Super User Posted October 14, 2013 The difference is in the pattern of the stripes. On a white bass, the stripes run straight the entire length of the fish. On a wiper, the stripes are broken up. Yours appears to be a white bass. A couple pounds is a nice size fish and they're good eating IF you eat the backstraps only. After you filet them, cut off and discard the red meat and stomach meat. The hybrids by us get over 20lbs and they put up a helluva fight. Quote
Super User Grizzn N Bassin Posted October 14, 2013 Super User Posted October 14, 2013 looks like a white bass to me nice catch! Quote
swagkid300 Posted October 14, 2013 Posted October 14, 2013 never seen 1 that big i always catch like lil ones like 1/4 lb Quote
Tony L. Posted October 14, 2013 Posted October 14, 2013 As far as white bass go (not talking about stripers or hybrids), you'd be hard pressed to find one much bigger than that. AWESOME catch! Quote
Preytorien Posted October 14, 2013 Posted October 14, 2013 Great catch! Looks like a lot of fun. Quote
Super User WRB Posted October 16, 2013 Super User Posted October 16, 2013 Oklahoma state record White bass is 5 lbs 4 oz. a 3 lb White bass could easily be your lake record! That's is a big white bass! Congratulations. Tom Quote
Brian Needham Posted October 16, 2013 Posted October 16, 2013 Good one for sure......... I don't think the Arkansas state record is over 6 either. I actually caught a few 1.5#ers and moved them to the golf course to try to grow them for a state record, LOL.(huge shad population at golf course) Quote
Jerry in SC Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 It's a white...only one lateral line all the way to the tail. I caught one about that same size on Lake Blackshear in Georgia over 40 years ago. I didn't realize what a monster it was until after it was cooked... Quote
bolivier Posted October 26, 2013 Author Posted October 26, 2013 Yeah guys it was a blast to catch. It's not a big lake where I caught it, so maybe some day I will catch it's bigger sibling... Quote
Super User AK-Jax86 Posted October 27, 2013 Super User Posted October 27, 2013 Nice fish congrats Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 That is a nice White! Congrats. Quote
Super User Ratherbfishing Posted October 28, 2013 Super User Posted October 28, 2013 That's a big sucker...er, I mean White Bass!!!!!! Quote
Nice_Bass Posted October 29, 2013 Posted October 29, 2013 Pretty excited about this one. Caught it today, Sunday. Around 3 o'clock on a blue/chrome red eye shad. Should have weighed it but I didn't. For comparison, one the left is striper, right is a wiper. Easiest way to see yours is just a white bass is the stripe just below the lateral line will be complete and to the tail on both wipers and stripers, not white bass. Nice fish! Quote
