Super User AK-Jax86 Posted October 7, 2013 Super User Posted October 7, 2013 I do not understand why when people are driving and they see a cop pulling someone over or an accident they feel the need to slow down, during rush hour, which turns a 4 lane highway into bumper to bumper stand still traffic!! I was expecting to see a massive accident but after about 20mins and I start moving I see 2 police officers stopping a car. So then I'm moving at regular speed for 3 mins and stop again for another 10. When I get moving I see a car in a ditch on the side of the road with the driver next to it on the phone. I just don't understand why or even how traffic comes to a complete stop. If everyone is going straight at a fast speed how does it stop? Lol I'm sure we have all felt this way but nobody can explain why people feel the need to slow down and stare like a fish in a tank. Quote
Super User Marty Posted October 7, 2013 Super User Posted October 7, 2013 We have a law here. New York's Move Over Law Has Changed Effective January 1, 2012Protects law enforcement officers, emergency workers, tow and service vehicle operators and other maintenance workers stopped along roadways while performing their duties. Drivers must use due care when approaching an emergency vehicle that displays red and/or white emergency lighting:On all roads and highways, drivers must reduce speed; On Parkways and other controlled access highways with multiple lanes, when approaching an emergency vehicle that displays red and/or white emergency lighting or a hazard vehicle displaying flashing amber lighting, drivers must move from the lane immediately adjacent to the emergency or hazard vehicle, unless traffic or other hazards exist to prevent doing so safely. Super User ww2farmer Posted October 8, 2013 Super User Posted October 8, 2013 I like to slow down, roll the passenger window down, taunt and yell expletives at the offending party while giving them the finger............unless it's a serious accident. 1 Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted October 8, 2013 Super User Posted October 8, 2013 Most of the time, when I find myself asking the question "Why." It's generally because this world is becoming filled with more and more idiots by the day. Ever stand in line at a fast food restaurant while the dumb butts in front of you talk about what their dog did last night, then when it is their turn to order, they have to look at the menu for 5 minutes. They have probably even ate there before, but they are just idiots. This world is being filled with them. I actually feel sorry for my son who is 8, because by the time he is 30, this place will be a complete disaster. Quote
Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted October 8, 2013 Super User Posted October 8, 2013 Everyone has to slow down in the hopes of seeing a mangled corpse. Its even more aggravating when the wreck is on the other side of the freaking road! My gosh people get on with your d**n day! Some of us have places to be. Huntsville Al. is the all time worst about this. Especially on 565. It happens at least 4 times every weekday morning. Quote
Super User slonezp Posted October 8, 2013 Super User Posted October 8, 2013 There have been gapers delays since we had cars on the road. Our state has signs over the highway telling people traffic conditions. Those signs cause more back ups than adverse conditions. Most of the time, when I find myself asking the question "Why." Same order for 40 years, and yes I hate those people as well. Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted October 8, 2013 Super User Posted October 8, 2013 I have a 5-10 minute widow of opportunity to haul tail home after work before it gets to where I want to choose which prison cell I want to reside. I came from a town where during the Mrs Kansas Pagent (largest gig in the city) I can make it across town in 5 minutes tops. Our city officers usually stay off the major extensions during the busy times unless they are needed. Traffic is so slow, speeding is non existent. What has always bothered me was how can you feel safe driving 3 feet off someone's butt? These peoples insurance has got to be through the roof Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted October 8, 2013 Super User Posted October 8, 2013 I've been driving 52 years and it's always been this way, people slow down and gawk. It's human nature and I bet more of us do it than we are admitting. I remember when the freeways did not have cement barriers between the 2 directions, just a low railing, we could see much more on the other side then. we did have much less traffic then due to smaller driving population. It's obvious that BR is not a cross section of America, there are no idiots here and I appreciate the fact everyone is so perfect. 1 Quote
Super User MCS Posted October 8, 2013 Super User Posted October 8, 2013 AK u are from Jersey the traffic here is 100 times better than the DC metro or the NYC metro areas. Quit complaining and enjoy it. Lol Quote
Super User Oregon Native Posted October 8, 2013 Super User Posted October 8, 2013 Feel your pain...was told when we moved out to Tennessee several years ago that the yellow line down the middle of back roads stood for absolutly nothing. I now concur. Quote
Super User AK-Jax86 Posted October 8, 2013 Author Super User Posted October 8, 2013 I'm not speaking on FL traffic I am saying people's need to admire other people's misfortune. I've seen people taking pics and videos of crashes/pull overs. Which then causes traffic back up. Man I can't count the amount of times on the NJ Turnpike and Parkway there have been some crazy accidents. I was on my way home from class and they had the parkway shut down for over a hour clearing a path and then had one lane to pass thru! That's when traffic is understandable not when you have all 4 lanes I should have written t differently Quote
Super User Ratherbfishing Posted October 8, 2013 Super User Posted October 8, 2013 I have little faith in mankind and I am disappointed almost on a daily basis with the kind of &^%$* that I witness (which is generally pretty minor compared to what I hear about on the news) but part of the congestion is the fact that there is (in this instance) 4 lanes moving at break neck speeds. Suddently one lane is closed and everyone is trying to get over and, at the same time, everyone slows down. When you have that number of cars being compressed into fewer lanes at slower speeds, it's bound to back up. Personally, I'd rather live in the extreme Northern part of North Dakota than deal with that kind of crap on a daily basis. 1 Quote
Super User Grizzn N Bassin Posted October 8, 2013 Super User Posted October 8, 2013 I love living in the country no traffic ever.... but in NY you have to move over... I slow down just for respect of the officer I don't want to be flying by him / or at 60 mph while there standing on the side of the road.... Quote
loudcherokee Posted October 10, 2013 Posted October 10, 2013 It gets pretty bad here in Pittsburgh. Worse rubber-necking I've ever seen. Ticks me off to no end. People will slow down for accidents and, i kid you not, as soon as they pass the wreck, its like the green flag has dropped at Daytona. It also happens when the wreck is on the other side. slonez, we also have the alert billboards over the highways, and people slow for those as well, almost causing accidents in the process. The ones that really tick me off is when the exit is backed up in the right lane, these self entitled jerkwads have the audacity to ride the left lane all the way to the front of the line, and stop, effectively backing up all traffic behind them in the left lane, and wait for someone to let them in. Those are the days I wish I drove a F-350 with a battering ram on the front of it. LC Quote
