I am looking into getting a setup for specifically frogs.  I am thinking about getting the Lews Tournament MG and im not sure about the rod yet.  What is everyone's thoughts on the reel and any suggestions on which rod would be best would be be very appreciated.  I plan on using 50# braid on the reel.  Looking in the $120- maybe $150 range on the rod.  Thanks guys

This probably won't help you mucb because my set up costs a little less but here's what I use.

7'6" MH Abu Garcia Veritas

Abu Garcia Pro Max 7.1:1

#50 Power Pro

I like the longer rod because it allows me to reach roght up to the bank and over the lilly pads with long casts, giving my frog a more lifelike presentation. It also helps pick up slack line quick to get a strong hookset with the frog hooks when the fish is far out. The 7.1:1 ratio on the reel also helps pick up slack line quick, and when frog fishing I have learned that timing is everything when setring the hook, the faster rario helps. The MH rod helps pull the fish out of sone pretty heavy slop and handle a big fish, plus handles a nice big fish very well. #50 braid is pretty self explanatory. Hopefully this helps.

The lews reel will be excellent as a frogging reel. I have one, and its a great reel. The more I use it, the more I like it. As far as rod, there are numerous options. My personal, frogging rod is a 7'4  St. Croix rage. I really enjoy sticking pigs with that rod. Before, I used MH Carbonlite. Nice rod also, extremely light and surprisingly strong. Get ready for many rod suggestions from other members.

I use a 7' H/F St Croix Avid with a curado 200e7 and 50lb Kanzen Braid.    I like the "shorter" rod because sometimes you need to be more accurate with your casts....

7'MH/F St. Croix Mojo, 40# 832, Curado 200e7. I'm good with the length at 7' like Jeff. Easier to get shorter and more accurate casts when needed and I can launch a LiveTarget frog a mile. So works great for distance casting and for precision.

I use a Kistler Zbone 7' MH Fast with a Shimano Core 50. Line is 15lb power pro. Works great

I use a Pinnacle Optimus LTE HS reel and a Pinnacle Perfecta DHC5 7' 3" MH/F rod with Power Pro Super 8 Slick braided line. Has been a great frog setup for me.

Your choice of reel is more than likely a good one, I have zero experience with Lew's products but they do get lots of positive feedback on the forums. I personally use a Citica 201E spooled with either 50 or 65# S8S on a Powell Max 735C. I don't remember the exact price on this rod but it's close to your $150 limit. Great frog rod, I don't have any trouble accurately casting into tight spots or "walking the frog". I know some prefer the slightly shorter 7' rods but I think the 7'3" is perfect. Good luck in your search.

I rock my 7'6 MH Abu Garcia Villain/Abu Garcia Revo SX with Power Pro Super 8 Slick braid #65!!

For slop and matts I prefer a heavy action, for more open water I prefer a MH. 50# braid and a fast reel. I use plastic frog mostly and the heavy action really helps with the hook set.

I have the same reel. I used it for that purpose initially, it worked great.

Thanks for the feedback guys I really appreciate it.  Im really liking what I see from St Croix, I think I may go with one of them.

Then a Premier or used Avid MH (minimum) would be my choice.

I landed a sweet 6lbr yesterday on a frog, with my Lews MG that I mentioned earlier on 7 ft MH Avid on 30lb braid. The rod and reel worked perfectly together. The only thing is that the Avid runs $30 more of your upper limit that's why I recommended the Rage that runs around your budget.

Great reel and covers the main aspects you need. High capacity for large amounts of heavy line, a high speed line pickup and a robust drag. Rods will come down to preference and many suggested some great rods

Maybe a stupid question but I'll ask it anyway.

When frog fishing with braid do you guys tie the frog directly to the braid or use a fluoro leader? I assume you're not too worried about line visibility in thick vegetation so the leader isn't needed. Did I answer my own question?

always always always tie direct frog fishing. yes you answered your own question.

dobyns 735 is my favorite frog rod can be had for 130 during major online retailer sales.

I'm only mentioning these because it can save you money if you don't frog fish much but the Dick's near me has a lot of abu garcia veritas (including the 7'6mh) for 89.97 which would make them roughly 45$ each after the .97 discount.  if you have one near you it may be worth checking out.
