toddwchandler Posted June 4, 2013 Posted June 4, 2013 I was fishing with some 5 inch Senkos last night and finally for the first time had some good success with them. I was fishing the Senkos texas rigged on Gamakatsu 2/0 EWG offset worm hooks. What I found interesting was that when I caught of largemouth, he was hooked solid, but the Senko was nowhere to be found. He wasn't gut hooked, so I don't think he swallowed it, but it was just gone. The next one I caught, the worm was pushed way up the line, a few feet above the hook. I guess I don't understand the physics of a largemouth bite. How is it that the worm is knocked clean off the hook or pushed way up the line? I have also seen this before with Zoom Trick Worms. Siebert Outdoors Posted June 4, 2013 Posted June 4, 2013 Senkos are so soft that the fish will throw them. Quote
CPBassFishing Posted June 4, 2013 Posted June 4, 2013 Its just because senkos have such awful durability and they are loaded with salt. If a fish shakes its head underwater more than twice your senko is gone. The hook or line just cuts right through them because they are half salt and half plastic. Quote
Super User BassinLou Posted June 4, 2013 Super User Posted June 4, 2013 What you experienced is common characteristic when fishing soft plastics. Regardless of the type of company you use. Yes, some brands say they last longer and are more durable however, sometimes a bass strikes with some gusto and a good hook set to match and its bye bye soft plastic. Quote
Zeeso Posted June 4, 2013 Posted June 4, 2013 That's a good thing! That means your catching fish. If I went through an entire bag of plastics in one trip and lost every one of them on a fish. I would be as happy as could be. Then head to the store the next day , buy 2 packs and pray I lose them on fish too! Like others said though. Senkos are the least durable but they seem to catch more fish than other similar baits. You could try some other brands maybe they will work just as well for you. 2 Quote

BrianSnat Posted June 5, 2013 Posted June 5, 2013 I'm lucky if I catch more than one bass per Senko. Some of the knockoffs like Yumdingers and Shimmy Sticks are more durable but don't have the same great action as a real Senko. Quote
BrianSnat Posted June 5, 2013 Posted June 5, 2013 One thought unrelated to your question, might I suggest a bigger hook. I find I have the best results with Senkos using a 4/0 EWG, or even a 5/0 if I'm out of 4/0. With the bigger hook the bait falls basically level with that flutter of the tail that is so enticing to bass. My hookup ratio is also much better than with the smaller hooks. Quote
toddwchandler Posted June 5, 2013 Author Posted June 5, 2013 I appreciate the feedback on the hook size. Honestly, I feel l like I am just guessing when choosing a hook size. I bought one pack each of Gamakatsu 1/0, 2/0, 3/0, and 4/0 hooks. Really no rhyme or reason why I chose the 2/0 for the Senkos. Quote
MrSwimJig Posted June 5, 2013 Posted June 5, 2013 I use the Owner hook designed for Senkos by Yamamoto and consider myself lucky to get more then 1 per Senko. Nature of the Senko... Quote
Super User Grizzn N Bassin Posted June 5, 2013 Super User Posted June 5, 2013 I use the sack tool.. caught 11 bass on one senko it does the job Quote
anonbassman Posted June 5, 2013 Posted June 5, 2013 To really answer your question... if the senko with the hook inside is sitting in the mouth of the bass, when your rip the lure out during the hookset the force pulls the worm out of the mouth , but the hook obviously stays there. The senko has nothing really stopping it so the force continues to pull it up the line, and then shook off fairly easily. Quote

But then I figured Im going through a pack/pack and a half each trip out. Catching 1-2 fish on each one so Im happy as a clam. I used the Yum Dingers for a while, they were ok, didnt like the slot they had in them. Honestly nothing wiggles like a Senko. Quote
Tim Cianciola Posted June 6, 2013 Posted June 6, 2013 i use a 4/0 ewg when tx rigging them. the worm can come off or push up the line for many reasons. fish shaking, hook set etc. Quote
Super User Grizzn N Bassin Posted June 7, 2013 Super User Posted June 7, 2013 Wacky rig tool** saves them very well Quote
