Megastink Posted June 3, 2013 Posted June 3, 2013 I am considering building a rod or two, just to try it. I love my powells, but I just want to build ONE! ANyway, I have a few questions: -Any experience with MHX (mud hole) blanks? Any good? -What TOOLS (not rod materials) do I need? -What kind of investment am I looking at here? Let me know. Thanks! mc6524 Posted June 4, 2013 Posted June 4, 2013 I've used Mud Hole before and was very happy with all of their products. Thier MHX blands aren't G-Loomis, but they aren't advertised to be. Since you want to do this to learn, I would suggest you don't spend a lot of money and give it a try. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted June 4, 2013 Posted June 4, 2013 The MHX blanks are much higher quality than the price would lead you to believe. I use a lot of them including for my own tourney rods. You don't need to invest in a lot of special tools to get started. In fact, turning a rod or two by hand gives you rael insight into how epoxy behaves. ghottis link is a good start. Quote
derekxec Posted June 4, 2013 Posted June 4, 2013 you can build a hand wrapper for cheap and then you just need a brush or spatula, some small mixing cups(unless you decide to use a one part finish), razors, china pencil, reamers(can make at home or buy), like a scotchbrite pad and 2 files as far as tools go then some threads in the colors you want, some tip glue, thread finish, tape/rubber bands and rod bond then you can buy your blank, grips, reel seat, guides, butt cap, winding check and tip top and youll have all you need to get that first rod built really if you get the smallest size of everything(thread finish, rod bond etc youll have enough supply to do a few rods no problem even with practicing Quote
Super User .RM. Posted June 4, 2013 Super User Posted June 4, 2013 Besides visiting the link ghoti replied with. I would suggest owning and reading the book written/produced by the owner of that site.... http://www.barnesandnoble.com/listing/2689444387908?r=1&cm_mmca2=pla&cm_mmc=GooglePLA-_-Book_5To14-_-Q000000633-_-2689444387908 Good Luck 1 Quote
