May 2, 2013 Unicorn Lake (2)

It's right up against the bank in about 1-1.5 ft. of water and I feel like the circle in the mucky bottom is almost too perfect to have occurred naturally.  The only thing is, I didn't see any bass in the area or fry on the bed or anything like that.  Although there were a lot of bluegill and pickerel in the area.  Is this a bass bed?  And if so, why wasn't there a bass nearby.  I was thinking maybe this bed had already been used but then shouldn't there be fry there with the male guarding them?

Looks like a bed site to me, however can't tell from the discription the size? Remember we are not the only predator bass contend with, blue herons or osprey can easily grab a male bass off the bed site in water that shallow.

Bass are only on a bed site until the eggs hatch, about 10 days on average, so it could be abandoned by now.

Thanks Tom.  As for the size, it was about a foot and a half, maybe 2 feet in diameter.  And I do always see a couple heron walking around in the shallows.

If it is that big, it's a bass bed. Look close at the bed and notice the tell tale light colored pebble, just off center about 3 o'clock, this is often in a bass bed and is usually what we call the sweet spot where the bass will not tolerate anything near that spot.

Very interesting.  Would have preferred it if there were a big fat momma bass sitting there but its good to know what I should be looking for.  Thank you sir.

I saw eight beds yesterday with males on them. I fish that lake every day, and yesterday was te first day I saw them. The spawn is on here in Southeast Pennsylvania!
