Go to the barge pit.

Watch the tides so you don't get stranded on low tide.

Watch the barges so you don't sink the boat.

Bass spawn in the barge pit and the creek to the left as you go into the area.

If you have never ventured into the barge pit be very careful and watch the mud bars as you enter the creek to the pit.

They also spawn in Meade's Pit.

And you can hit the oxbow after Meade's Pit and fish along that shoreline and around the Richmond Yacht Basin.

If you have a boat that can carry you to the Appomattox go into that river and look for beds, especially in the Comstock and Swift Creek areas.

Remember, they want out of the current. So you can add to your list such places as Barge Harbor, the DuPont Pit and any places that do not have heavy current.

You have a GMCO map of the Tidal James (Historic James River) so use it to locate the places mentioned above and any others you can find.

If you want to travel a good distance from Osborne you can either run up to Herring Creek on the other side of the Harrison Bridge or put in at Hopewell (follow the dead fish to Hopewell) and hit Herring Creek and the Appomattox.

Otherwise consider fishing the Chick River creeks. Lots of beds in those creeks.

And check out the tide charts online so you will know when the tide will be at its lowest so you can find the beds and get hung up on a mud flat.

Hey, that's part of fishing the Historic James River.

I've decided to go out and fish a pretty big (# of boats wise at least) tournament on the James this weekend... blind - just lucked up into having a free day and decided I am gonna go out and see how I do.  Never fished the James and have limited experience on tidal rivers.  I've read the posts above and was wondering where some of this stuff is at - like the barge pit and such.  Any pointers for this time of year on the James would be helpful.  I have a solid gameplan I think but am trying to get as much info as I can before I head out.

Thanks for any input.
