Fishing N Boots Posted April 1, 2013 Posted April 1, 2013 Was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on a fish finder to purchase for put up from with my TM. The Transducer is obviously going to be on my trolling motor. I just installed an Lowrance Elite 4x at the wheel and put the transducer on the transom. I will be looking to spend around $250 for one. Super User Wayne P. Posted April 2, 2013 Super User Posted April 2, 2013 Humminbird 346c DI. That will give you 2D sonar plus Down Imaging in a color display in your price range. 1 Quote
Fishing N Boots Posted April 2, 2013 Author Posted April 2, 2013 The guys at bass pro were telling me to go with Lowrance Elite 5x. What would be the difference between the two? The down imaging? Also what about the Humminbird 571 HD Di, it's the same price but with 5" screen. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted April 2, 2013 Super User Posted April 2, 2013 The 571 HD DI has a gray scale display and has traditional 2D sonar and Down Imaging just like the 346c DI It also has the highest resolution display in the industry for that size unit. The Elite 5X is just a traditional 2D unit but is color and a 5" screen Quote
Fishing N Boots Posted April 2, 2013 Author Posted April 2, 2013 Do you think the 346c DI would be hard to see whenever I am standing up in the front? Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted April 2, 2013 Super User Posted April 2, 2013 In the dual view it would be somewhat difficult to see due to the size of the displayed views being 1/2 of the screen height. With just one view displayed it would be just like the 5" screen's vertical height. http://store.humminbird.com/media/document/346cDIOperationsManual.pdf Quote
Fishing N Boots Posted April 2, 2013 Author Posted April 2, 2013 Awesome, thank you very much for all the info. I will go to bass pro tonight and check it out. Quote
Fishing N Boots Posted April 2, 2013 Author Posted April 2, 2013 So do you think that going with the 571 HD DI would be a better fit for the bow or do you think the 346c DI is still the better option? The 571 HD DI has a gray scale display and has traditional 2D sonar and Down Imaging just like the 346c DI It also has the highest resolution display in the industry for that size unit. The Elite 5X is just a traditional 2D unit but is color and a 5" screen Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted April 2, 2013 Super User Posted April 2, 2013 Either is a "fit". I personally would choose the highest resolution dislay of the 571 I use a 10.4" screen at my bow. Quote
Fishing N Boots Posted April 2, 2013 Author Posted April 2, 2013 Awesome, thanks. The guy at bass pro was talking me off of the grey scales but I dont see the huge advantage to color. Either is a "fit". I personally would choose the highest resolution dislay of the 571 I use a 10.4" screen at my bow. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted April 2, 2013 Super User Posted April 2, 2013 Color is somewhat easier to see in bright sunlight and with different colors representing different echo strengths, some find that easier.to interpret. It's all about being familiar with what the unit is showing. I use gray scale for Imaging sometimes, since for me it shows some details better. You really can't get the full operational effect of either indoors. Quote
Fishing N Boots Posted April 2, 2013 Author Posted April 2, 2013 Wouldnt the HD grey scale make up for the normal grey scale. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted April 2, 2013 Super User Posted April 2, 2013 HD in that unit model number just means the high screen pixel density--the images will look sharper. The gray scale is the same as a lower resolution display. Quote
Fishing N Boots Posted April 4, 2013 Author Posted April 4, 2013 well I was at Bass Pro about to buy one for 250 whenever I looked on Craigslist and saw an elite 5 for 350 which was $150 cheaper than Bass Pro so call the guy and went picked it up for 350 so now my question is the 5 has sonar and GPS with a big screen should I put that up with the trolling motor or put that by the steering wheel and put the elite 4x up on a trolling motor Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted April 4, 2013 Super User Posted April 4, 2013 The use of the GPS function should determine where you want that. Quote
Fishing N Boots Posted April 4, 2013 Author Posted April 4, 2013 Well they both connect to the same transducer so i can switch as much as i want. $350 good for the elite 5 Quote
