Trailer Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 My Humminbird allows me to store waypoints. I have not used this feature yet. Do I need an SD card and if so, is it the standard type? Also, what would be the recommended storage file size? I believe it's a 587iHD DS Also, would it be to my advantage to get an SD card with a map already saved? If so what brand would you recommend? Super User Jig Man Posted March 23, 2013 Super User Posted March 23, 2013 An sd card will give you an alternate storage for wpts. I have a few thousand and keep them organized by lake. They took lots of time to find and record so I keep them on 2 different cards and in 2 different places in my computer. Wpt files are small and you don't need a very big card for them. If you record sonar to a card then you will need a larger one. Map cards are not ment for wpt storage. You should not try to put anything on a map card as you might corrupt the data there and lose your maps. Quote
Trailer Posted March 24, 2013 Author Posted March 24, 2013 What is recording sonar? I follow you on the rest of the stuff. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted March 24, 2013 Super User Posted March 24, 2013 Waypoints, Tracks, and Routes are in the unit's waypoint library. No where else. They will never be on a memory card usless you Export those to a SD card if you want to and have a copy. Your unit does not read your GPS data from the memory card and you do not need a memory card for any GPS function. The best method to manage your GPS data is with the free computer program HumminbirdPC. You Export your unit waypoint library to a memory card and load that data to the HumminbirdPC program. The best performing memory cards for Humminbird units are the Sandisk brand and the best of those is the class 10 speed ones. Normally a 4 GB is plenty large unless you record a lot. It's hard to find a card smaller than 4GB anymore. You can use up to a 32 GB. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted March 24, 2013 Super User Posted March 24, 2013 Recording is a feature to save all the unit's functions to play back on the unit just like the Simulator it has. There is third party software available to playback recordings on your computer. Additionally you can use those recordings to submit data to Navionics to correct any map errors. Check your manual to see of Recording is a function your unit is capable of. There is no such model as a 587iHD DS. If you have the 587 model it is the 587ci HD DI Combo. That model has a color display, internal GPS antenna, and has the Down Imaging feature plus dual beam 2D sonar. Quote
Trailer Posted March 24, 2013 Author Posted March 24, 2013 Yeah, I was trying to go off of, no pun intended, memory on that model. Basically, I would need an SD card for exporting my waypoints? Makes sense. I look forward to this capability. I'm not saying waypoints will make me an instant success but I do think they will help me become better at locating fish. Quote
RyneB Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 I suggest getting the Navionics chip. Just make sure the lakes you fish are on there. There's a free PC app that comes with it and you can go over the maps while in the comfort of your own home. You can mark waypoints and then transfer them to your SD card. Quote

The last I heard the PC app is no longer available, but is still supported so far if you have it.. It is replaced with the on-line Web App on the Navionics web site and that will be updated to add more features. Check their web site for info. Quote

The problem is the updates take forever. But it is fun, when im bored I just look over the lakes I will fish in the future and save waypoints. Quote

But it is fun, when im bored I just look over the lakes I will fish in the future and save waypoints. The PC app and the Web App are different. You stated the PC app comes with the purchase of the Navionics software and it doesn't any more-that means it is discontinued. You buy the map software now, you do NOT get NavionicsPC. The PC app is a program you downloaded and installed on your computer and is the one that you update while connected to their server. The Web App is on the Navionics web site and is not downloadable to a PC. Navionics keeps that updated on their site. You cannot download it. BTW, I updated my Platinum East card today and it took 4 hours. NavionicsPC doesn't take that long to update. I use a slow DSL connection. Quote
RyneB Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 ohhhh ok. How do you update the actual chip? Everytime I try it, it says it will close the program and nothing happens. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted March 24, 2013 Super User Posted March 24, 2013 You have to go through the proceduce that the site is trying to tell you about. When you insert your card, it contacts Navionics all by itself. It downloads the Navionics Store software and an icon. That download is what is used to update your card when you insert it in your computer. If you don't let it complete that phase, you cannot update your card. Something IS happening-- you have to pay attention. That soltware is also what is going to be used for the Sonar Charts feature for Humminbird and Raymarine owners with the Platinum edition software. Trailer Posted March 25, 2013 Author Posted March 25, 2013 which map would you guys suggest (gold, premium, platinum, premium 10)? Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted March 25, 2013 Super User Posted March 25, 2013 which map would you guys suggest (gold, premium, platinum, premium 10)? The one that has the waters you fish and is compatable with your unit. That information is on the Navionics web site. Quote
Trailer Posted March 25, 2013 Author Posted March 25, 2013 Ok. I haven't got that far into the electronics game. I guess as I progress with the Humminbird maybe I'll see a greater need for the navionics. Right now I just want to get out on the water more than anything. I would give anything to throw a Senko in the water right now. Quote
jhoffman Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 Having ANY map is better than just the base maps. The base maps dont show creek channels and river channels. There are still a lot of lakes without coverage. My home lake, I can see the channels and thats it. I marked with a handheld gps the spots I wanted during draw down. Those I still couldnt see I opened the lake in Google Earth with the USGS topo plugged in and found them on there. My lake has an old farm pond in it, right in the very center that it rarely gets low enough to see. A spot in the main channel that has dual humps right off an intersection of a creek channel and a roadbed. Without google earth, I wouldnt know they exist. Quote
