VinnieT Posted December 24, 2012 Posted December 24, 2012 What do you guys think are the 10 most important things to have in the tackle box? Quote
The Young Gun Posted December 24, 2012 Posted December 24, 2012 1.) Hook Sharpener 2.) Jaw Spreaders (In case of pike/pickeral/even a musky) 3.) Multiple sets of pliers 4.) Extra hooks 5.) Sinkers/Snap Swivels/Three way swivels (all terminal tackle you care for) 6.) Tooth Picks (for plastics to keep them last and to peg weights) 7.) More Lures for when you lose the one tied on 8.) Super Glue, you never know when you could need it. 9.) Head lamp for night fishing 10.) A good stash of candy Cole Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted December 24, 2012 Super User Posted December 24, 2012 Do your best to remember everything you might need, knowing it is probable that you'll forget something. My 10 most important might not be your 10 most important. This year I got stressed about leaving my church key in the truck, several minutes later I remembered that it was possible to open a bottle of beer with a pair of pliers. My boat has one pretty deep bin, I try to throw everything I might need into the bin. I used to stress about spacing out my fishing pliers and clippers, I'd use them and then drop them and not remember where I put them. I fixed that issue. I got 6 pairs of pliers and 5 clippers (one of which I wear around my neck) and I strew them around the boat before I start fishing. Now, no matter where I am sitting in my boat I know that there is a pair of pliers close by. But I digress, seriously, I think that a couple of spare drain plugs are important. I think that a few extra shear pins for my trolling motor are important. I think that a first aid kit is important. I think that a set of spare fuses for my trolling motor and electronics wiring is important. When I go fishing by myself, (which is most of the time) I carry 20 to 23 rods, rigged and ready to go. I think that carrying an appropriate lure kit for each of those rods is important. This is one of those questions that everyone solves differently. Quote
The Young Gun Posted December 24, 2012 Posted December 24, 2012 Thats what I forgot.. braided line cutters.. Quote

The Young Gun Posted December 24, 2012 Posted December 24, 2012 How will tooth picks help? Pegging weights on t rigs. And it helps keep plastics on the hook longer Quote

The Young Gun Posted December 24, 2012 Posted December 24, 2012 How do you use the tooth picks for plastics? Say on a wacky rig, you rig the hook through then put the toothpick right over the hook so it gives more back bone to the plastic instead if ripping the plastic easily.. Sorry if that's a little confusing.. Quote
MyKeyBe Posted December 24, 2012 Posted December 24, 2012 How do you use the tooth picks for plastics? When you rig the bait, make sure the eye of the hook is in the bait. Run the toothpick from the top of the bait down through the hook eye and out the bottom of the bait. Trim the ends of the toothpick flush with the bait. Quote

Super User SirSnookalot Posted December 26, 2012 Super User Posted December 26, 2012 Other than my 1 rod and few lures for freshwater all I have with me is a pliers and I wear a pair of socks for ant protection. I do wear a fanny pack for my inshore fishing still only 1 rod, with more than enough lures, some swivels and leader line, pliers and a flashlight I wear around my neck and sometimes a pier net.......that's it. I didn't always fish this light, the years have taught me that I catch as many fish now than I did when I was lugging all that stuff around, so I keep it simple. In all fairness I'll have some other rods in the car, I fish for a variety of species but I usually know my target before I leave home, which is predicated on tides, surf height and wind direction. I will have med spin rod in the car for a little bass fishing on the way home. When I'm offshore in the ocean I take 3 rods (2 of which are always in the rod holders on the bimini top out of the way), as we mainly drift with live or frozen bait I have an ample supple of hooks, king rigs, and terminal gear, a few spoons, jigs and lures for casting and trolling. I'm only 15 and I found out after having to ride my bike with all my gear that less gear is okay.. I used to have three 3700's in my jaw string bag, jaw spreaders, pliers, and a bag of m&ms. Along with my two 6'6" rods in my hand.. All of which i'd be biking down a 45mph road with. I used to get a lot of funny looks, but its all worth it to catch the bass. 2 Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted December 26, 2012 Super User Posted December 26, 2012 If Im just bank fishing, I have a little bag from NAFC that has zipper sleeves inside fornsome soft plastics, and I put some hooks and weights in another little bag in the side pouch. I wear cargo style pants that I also carry a small plano box with a few crainkbaits just in case, and a leatherman. If Im on the boat, well pretty much everything I own goes with me all inside my Shimano bag. To give you an idea, all my soft plastics, crankbaits, spinners, buzzs, topwaters, terminal tackle, spools of line for each setup, cleaning/repair kit, rags, dips/dyes, bug spray, sunscreen, line conditioner, pliers, braid scissors, flashlight, caplight, and cull kit. Mind you there is about 60#'s of stuff in there, and plenty of room for more. Quote

Super User roadwarrior Posted December 26, 2012 Super User Posted December 26, 2012 If you are talking about lures, you need to cover the water column from top to bottom. Quote
SudburyBasser Posted December 26, 2012 Posted December 26, 2012 I'm assuming we're not counting lures and terminal tackle because that would be obvious. Outside of that: braid cutter sun screen camera licence pliers knife rain gear scale scent/attractant first aid kit Quote
