Super User Fishing Rhino Posted November 4, 2012 Super User Posted November 4, 2012 I'm assuming you are referring to the raising/lowering cable. Yes, mine broke on my Z8 with only a few months use. The one on my Z7 broke when it had been used approximately one year. Both broke where they passed through the pivoting plastic guide. When I looked closely, both have a casting ridge that gradually gnaws the line, 'til it breaks. Use a fine, round file and smooth the radius on the guide over which the line passes. Then use a very fine abrasive paper like emery cloth to finish smoothing the radius. When that's done spray it, and the line with silicone spray to reduce friction. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted November 4, 2012 Super User Posted November 4, 2012 If your deploy rope is breaking, you can do what Rhino suggests and also put a coating of bow string wax on the rope. You can also replace the rope with plastic coated steel cable. If it is the steering cable that is breaking, it depends on what steering cable system you have and where it is breaking. Single--push/pull or Dual --pull/pull. Quote
basshunter81 Posted November 4, 2012 Author Posted November 4, 2012 I was referring to the steering cable. Quote
Crappiebasser Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 Is it hard to turn like it's binding? Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted November 5, 2012 Super User Posted November 5, 2012 I was referring to the steering cable. WHICH steering cable type? Quote
basshunter81 Posted November 5, 2012 Author Posted November 5, 2012 It does not feel like it is binding and I have no indication before it goes. It just breaks. It always beaks at the point where it connects to the pedal. Everything is stock and was installed at the dealership. Quote
Al Wolbach Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 I have never had a problem with the steering cables on my motor guides and I have had them for years. If it is not binding I don't know of a cause. Could you be stepping on the pedal while the motor is in the stowed position? Over time this may weaken the cable. Just guessing........................Al Quote
RyneB Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 I have a 12 year old motor guide and the steering cable has showed no signs of failure. I would contact Motor Guide and see what they can do for you. Quote
