Megastink Posted July 24, 2012 Posted July 24, 2012 Ok, so I have heard both sides of the aisle: KVD prefers EWG hooks on all his hardbaits, while Rick Clunn preaches the round bend. I've used both, caught fish on both, but I feel like they're each have their place. So, does one design have an advantage over another in a specific situation? I, for instance, could see EWG hooks being more efficient on a squarebill around cover, due to the inward turned points. Any thoughts? Quote
moguy1973 Posted July 24, 2012 Posted July 24, 2012 The mustad ultra KVD trebles (short shank EWG) work real well. Haven't lost nearly as many fish since switching. They allow a bigger hook while not changing the action of the lure. Quote
Megastink Posted July 24, 2012 Author Posted July 24, 2012 I'm more concerned with the "snaggyness" of the hooks, rather than the fish holding power. Thanks for the info though. Gammy is coming out with a SS EWG treble soon. I'll buy that one over any Mustad! Quote
Megastink Posted August 1, 2012 Author Posted August 1, 2012 Do EWG trebles come though cover better than round bend trebles? Quote
RobertBG Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 Do EWG trebles come though cover better than round bend trebles? I dont know........why not rig up 2 of the same baits and fish them both to find out? Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted August 1, 2012 Super User Posted August 1, 2012 I prefer the EWG trebles over the round bends in both shallow and deep divers. I've been using the normal Mustad triple grips ever since they came out but I have quite a few baits that feature premium round bend hooks that are good also. The only difference to me would be the EWG seems to hold the fish better, I have lost more fish on Gamakatsu trebles that I have with Mustad Triple Grips and it doesn't mean Mustads are sharper because they aren't but they do hold better and not all of them but the Triple Grips.
