MichiganFishing1997 Posted July 23, 2012 Posted July 23, 2012 Just posted something very similar to this a few days ago! Id like to know too, if nothing shows up in a few days, i may just have to go for it, the reviews dont seem too bad. Quote
mmoritz11 Posted July 23, 2012 Author Posted July 23, 2012 thats what i was thinking. worst comes to worst i have to return it. 50 percent off is hard to ignore no matter what it is! Quote
MichiganFishing1997 Posted July 23, 2012 Posted July 23, 2012 Exactly, im trying to figure out what i would use it for though. What discount rod from cabelas would you put it on and what would you use it for? Quote
mmoritz11 Posted July 23, 2012 Author Posted July 23, 2012 im not so sure about what rod but i would probably make it a spinner bait reel or possibly jerkbait. wbu? Quote
MichiganFishing1997 Posted July 23, 2012 Posted July 23, 2012 I was aiming towards a jerbait rod, we have so much in common lol. Im looking for a rod around the 60 dollar mark if youd like to help. Quote
BassCats Posted July 23, 2012 Posted July 23, 2012 They company was recently sold, though they say that the new owners will be coming back with a revamped line-up Quote
mmoritz11 Posted July 23, 2012 Author Posted July 23, 2012 shimano makes reliable rods for decent prices. i hope i dont offend you but im guessing you might be somewhat knew. but like i said im just guessing. this being said if i were you i save up a little more cash and buy a rod more expensive. one thing i have noticed is i stopped buying cheap combos and just sucked it up and bought quality things. my first quality purchase was i bought two abu garcia veritas's (7ft med and 7ft6in med hvy) and can tell a HUGE difference in the cheaper rods ive owned (obviously). hope this helps Quote

MichiganFishing1997 Posted July 23, 2012 Posted July 23, 2012 Im not new, and i have quality gear, i just didnt want to be stuck with a rod for a reel that i ended up sending back if that were to happen. 1 Quote
MichiganFishing1997 Posted July 23, 2012 Posted July 23, 2012 I was thinking a Kistler Carbon Steel Micro 6'10" M/F Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted July 23, 2012 Super User Posted July 23, 2012 I bought the original US Reel and the Ray Scott rod. The rod was just "ok" and the reel sucked. Quote

Super User webertime Posted July 23, 2012 Super User Posted July 23, 2012 My understanding is that with the goofy levelwind you will run into issues on retrieves where you throw slack into the line (jerkbaits and TW). Quote

How about you share the rest of the story, or at least let everyone know how many years ago that was and the fact that you had a spinning combo and not a baitcaster like the OP asked about. I owned an 800sx for a while and it was a great caster, especially for light lures like weightless Trickworms and 1/4 oz cranks, but I wouldn't use one for jerks due to the way the levelwind works. You'll wind up with tons of little loops in the line. It probably wouldn't cause any problems, but it's definitely not ideal. The size/weight can also be an issue for some folks. I found it comfortable to palm, but someone with smaller hands may not find it as comfortable. 1 Quote
MichiganFishing1997 Posted July 24, 2012 Posted July 24, 2012 Great info! what would you suggest using it for then because of the fact that its a levelwind?? Quote

Once bitten, twice shy. Quote
Stasher1 Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 The original US Reel was a spinning reel, heavily promoted as a "technical innovation". Once bitten, twice shy. I had problems with a '95 Ford Escort, so by your logic, I should assume that all new Ford F150s are junk. 10+ years have passed since the first US Reel spinning reels were released. The reel you owned shares nothing with the Supercaster 800sx except a brand name. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted July 25, 2012 Super User Posted July 25, 2012 Your point is well stated, these reels have nothing in common except the brand name. BTW, I bought the Ford Granada when it was first introduced in 1975. This was (arguably) the worst car ever produced. I have never bought a Ford since nor will I ever buy one again. 1 Quote
aceman387 Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 I cant say much about the u s baitcaster reels since i dont own any of them but i do have three of their spinning reels and i prefer using them over some of the shimano reels i own,Their is nothing fancy about them but they get the job done, plus i havent had any problems with any of them in the 4-5 years i have owned them.
