Scorcher214 Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 Finally got a day I could go out and snorkel for the first time. My parents got some snorkel gear when they went to mexico. My dad anchored the boat about 20yds from some bulrushes and I swam over there because it was too shallow to take the boat over there. Swam around the outside of it and came to a part where I could go into it. About 10ft in I saw a couple of bass, then a few more. About 10 bass swimming in a loose group through the weeds. I chased them around for a little bit then went to go look for other fish. Found 2 bluegills swimming together a little bit later. One was average sized for St Clair but the other one was a monster! At least a 1lb, if not 1.5lbs. I just kinda looked at him and he stared right at me. Like he was about to attack me or something haha. Wind picked up and it started thundering, so i had to leave earlier than I wanted. Im going out tomorrow in my kayak to the same spot. Hopefully there will not be as much wind and the water will be clearer. Im eventually going to get a DIVER DOWN flag for my kayak so I can snorkel in some deeper spots without having to worry about getting buzzed by a boat. Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted July 16, 2012 Super User Posted July 16, 2012 Sounds like a pretty neat deal - And btw - don't kid yourself about not having to worry about being buzzed by other boats - Not everyone knows what that red & white flag means . . . . Stay Safe A-Jay Quote

Super User Sam Posted July 17, 2012 Super User Posted July 17, 2012 Bass are inquisitive animals. They will watch you from a distance. If you can get a metal rod and a hammer and bang the metal rod into the bottom the bass may congregate to watch you. You can study their behaviors and patterns to learn how to approach them when you are fishing. You are doing what a lot of us wish we could do when we go fishing, i.e. swim with the fish to see what they are doing. Take some pics and post them for us. They will be very interesting. Quote
Scorcher214 Posted July 17, 2012 Author Posted July 17, 2012 Went again out in my kayak yesterday. Found A LOT of little bass and some fairly large bluegill. I was swimming around this one tight cluster of reeds and was not finding a single thing. I decided to turn around and go back to my kayak and as soon as I turn around there are about 10 bluegills right behind me! Just looking at me, waiting for me to continue swimming so they could follow me or something haha! And I started looking for an underwater camera. I also found 1 decent sized bass that was maybe 2lbs, and two perch. The bass, even though they were just babies, were really neat to watch. They were watching me as much as I watched them. Sam, what about the metal rod would attract the bass? The sound? Also, anybody know of an underwater iphone case? Or a camera I can take underwater that would take good video and pictures? Quote
Super User Sam Posted July 17, 2012 Super User Posted July 17, 2012 Yep. The sound of you hammering on the metal rod will send vibrations and sound into the water so don't be surprised what fish come around to see what is going on. Quote
Scorcher214 Posted July 17, 2012 Author Posted July 17, 2012 Well I'll try it out next time if I can me a metal rod. I can't wait till I see a big pike or muskie swimming around! Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted July 17, 2012 Posted July 17, 2012 Your on the St Clair river side are'nt you? That water over there is crystal clear. Quote
Scorcher214 Posted July 18, 2012 Author Posted July 18, 2012 Oh ya. You can pretty much see the bottom everywhere. In a couple of spots though, for reasons unknown, I could only see about 1-2ft in front of me. Ordered my diver down flag the weather this weekend is supposed to be great so I'll be going out into some deeper parts (10ft being deep on the northern side of St Clair) Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted July 18, 2012 Super User Posted July 18, 2012 Also, anybody know of an underwater iphone case? Or a camera I can take underwater that would take good video and pictures? I use a Pentax Optio W20, it's an older model. Pentax makes a new version. The W20 is small, easy to use and good underwater.
