Sorry if this topic has been brought up one million times, but I searched the forums and couldn't find anything detailed enough. I'm rather new to fishing, and I've heard really good things about the super fluke. I went out and bought a pack of pearl white w/chartreuse tail super flukes, and went to the river. After about 3 hours of struggling, I gave up and switched to a jig.

I had the super fluke texas rigged weightless, but what techniques do you guys use for the retrieve? I tried jerking it lightly then pausing for a second, then reeling in slack and jerking it again, but I wasn't having much luck. I know the rule of thumb is colder water is slower retrieve and warmer water is a faster retrieve, but is there a point where warm becomes too hot and it's better to go slow again? Also, what conditions are best for super fluke fishing? It's been unusually warm here (95+), so maybe flukes aren't well-suited for temperatures this warm?

Finally, what type of structure/formation do you guys look for when using a super fluke? I tried throwing mine across the mouth of a creek as well as around a downed tree (only in about 3-4 feet of water though), but are there any other places where a super fluke works well? I don't own a boat, so it has to be limited to locations accessible from shore. I tried working it semi-quickly across the top of the water with pauses, as well as a very slow retrieve deeper in the water column, and still couldn't get a bite.

I'm not ready to give up on the fluke yet, but I'd like to get some feedback so I'm not wasting my time if it just isn't good conditions for them. Sorry for all the questions, but thanks for any help.

A fluke is a very vesitale bait. You can fish them from top water to 20+ ft. if you have the patience to. They work well in alot of situation, but I'll give you a few that they exceed in for me.

1. Shallow grass- I love to throw it to the grass edge and let it sink, twitch it 2-3 times, the let it sink again. Make sure you are feeling for a fish before you start twitching it or you will pull it out of a fish's mouth and not even know it. This is my #1 fluke technique.

2. Carolina Rig- For me, the best carolina rig plastic ever!

3. Top water- Jerk the fluke numerous times until it starts flipping out of the water. Let it sink for a second then do it again. I've have many blow up on it as it wsa in the air!

Fishing a super fluke weightless is great but they stay up high in the water column, in fact if you work them quick it becomes more of a topwater bait. The problem you are having is being on the shore you can't access better water to fish it and with high temps the oxygen levels are probably low so the fish won't be in a mood to really come up on a fluke. If you really want to learn to fish the fluke right now you are going to have to fish a worm or jig or something else and catch a fish, it sounds strange but by using a bait that you know you can catch fish on will help you get one and then you will know an area that is holding fish. Once you find the fish you can use the super fluke and find out what type of retrieves work best for the current conditions and you will also see how working the bait at different speeds and rod angles makes the bait act and you will know in the future how to fish it to match the mood of the fish. The other thing that will help you learn to fish the fluke is when you get a day and the fish are biting really well, this is the time to use a bait you want to learn, you will know what bites feel like and which retrieves got the more aggressive strikes and what depth and so on and so forth.

I catch both fresh and saltwater fish with the super fluke. It is my go to bait most days. Always tie it with a loop knot and try to work it with plenty of slack. This way you can basically walk the dog just sub surface. Also its effective on a dead drop in and alongside structure such as dead wood and bridge abutments. often times fish will follow it to the boat but not strike it or just swipe it. when that happens try the smaller fluke.

I use them for deep schooling bass with a weighted swimbait hook. Still get the same motion as working it on or just below the surface. I'll be using it that way tomorrow.

Thanks for all the replies guys. Really detailed and helpful. I'm thinking smalljaw is right about it not being the best conditions to shore fish a fluke now, but I'll be sure to try these other suggestions next time I go out on the water.

I always fish it weightless on the banks when i'm shore fishing. But when I'm out in my dads boat we usually fish it weightless but sometimes we will fish it with a small weight just to be able to swim it. Today I went out for like 3 hours and caught 2 bass, they were both about a pound and a half. I was fishing in a creek that feeds right into a decent lake and there was just so much action in the shallows of like 3-5 pound bass. But when you get a bite you will tell, they completely swallow it and they will start pulling it. But then again I have never used those colors, I usually use a green pumpkin or a dark brown one. I recently went and bought some white pearl and blue ice. I'm going to go and try them out tomorrow. Have a great them trying them out, you will catch allot of fish.I've been using them for 5 to 6 years.

PS: I was fishing in the shallows so there might be more bass then you think, then again I don't know where you live and it was really cloudy here. Have a nice night.

I fish it texas rigged with no weight and use a somewhat fast jigging retreival method. If your doing it right it should stay anywhere from the top to about 2 maybe 3 feet deep. I have had success all year round and in all types of stuctural areas. I have caught at least 25 largemouths on them ranging from a half a pound to 8 pounds

this is good advice.
