PA is a pretty big state, might want to say where in PA you are visiting.

If you're going to NW Pa., contact Darl Black, Cochranton, Pa. Darl is an outdoor writer who writes for In-Fisherman, BASSMaster, and several other magazines. He used to guide and if he can't take you I'm sure that he can put you with someone who would.

If visiting on the PA/NJ line near the Allentown/Bethlehem/Easton area, do a search for guides on the Delaware River cuz that is the only place where you will catch enough bass to make it worth paying for a guide. Bass fishing sucks in this area otherwise. There is a Smallmouth Forum that you have to be recommended by a member in order to post. You can read it tho. Guys have 50-100 Smallmouth days. Not sure but I think most bass are caught north of this area.

Bass fishing in PA isn't very good in most places. The only species the Fishing Department in this state concern themselves with are trout....how many to stock and where. Very aggravating since these are put and take fish. Minsi Lake where I fish is a Bass/Trout Management lake. Maximum depth is 14 feet. The trout don't stand a chance of surviving. Bass are managed by specifying that a keeper must be 3" longer minimum size than non-managed bass lakes (15" vs 12").

Most of us bass fisherman are catch-and-release while I wouldn't bet my life on others releasing a bass even if undersize unless there was a law enforcement persoin standing next to them.

Beltzville State Park is only 30-40 minutes or so from where you are. Not a bad place to fish. It can get bad in the middle of a bright sunny day when there are boats flying all over the place, but then again so can any place. It is heavily pressured and it is tough to master but there are big ones in there.

Probably been 20 years or more since I was last there. Last couple times we went, it was to picnic. I didn't bother to take a pole since fishing is so bad there during the day from shore. Had a neighbor when I first moved to this area 27 years ago who left at 8 p.m. for Beltsville and returned home around 9 the next morning. He caught some pretty nice fish. He has also been divorced for a good many years. Couldn't say if spending the night fishing instead of sleeping with his wife had anything to do with that. :)

Since you said something so broad as a state, I'll suggest lake erie.

X2 If I was going to pay for a guide in PA, that is where I would go. I understand 4 lb smallies are the norm if you know what you are doing.

Up here by me in Pike county their are a few good spots. I am lucky enough to live about 20 min. from Lake Shohola, which is considered one of the few "lunker" LM bass lakes in the state.

Hey, I'm from Milford! I've only ever caught Pickeral in Shahola, but the. Again, I've never been in a boat there.

The Philly area actually has some great pieces of water for LM around it. I was on Green Lane the other day, and my five biggest went 17lbs. Not bad for Pa...

I live in Milford as well. ( Gold key Lake). Shohola is rough shore fishing. I have 3 spots I hit religiously. The best one for me is close to the first boat ramp. The one that is closest to RT. 6. It is literally the area right between the island and the Big boulder that protrudes out of the water. It always peoduces... but you do need a boat to get there.
