These are all over the pond I fish and I'm curious what to call them. I've googled green sunfish and they look similar but these are yellow instead of green. The yellow sunfish pics I saw looked different. Thanks

Green sunfish without a doubt. They get various colors on their chest but are usually yellow or orange. I catch hundreds of them every year to use for catfish bait.

I did some more searching and found out they hybridize with other panfish. Some of the others are lighter so that explains it. Green sunfish it is. Thanks

Are they very good for catfish bait? How do u rig them up?

That is a goggle eye. I googled it and they are also called warmouth. They have a bigger mouth than other perch and are thicker bodied. If I am catching perch for the table this is the kind I want because of them being thicker and meatier. When we use them around here for bait we either hook them live in the back or peel them. To peel them cut off the fins and then the head and you can then pinch the skin between your knife blade and thumb and peel it right off leaving a nice bright white fresh bait for flatheads and blues.

This is what you caught. They are longer and have a much bigger mouth than most other panfish, similar to a warmouth or rock bass. And yes they make great catfish bait, especially for flatheads and big channels. I use them alive on a slipsinker rig near catfish holding areas. Green sunfish like to hide under stuff so they will swim very hard trying to get to a snag, those vibrations draw in hungry catfish.

This is a warmouth, very similar size, shape, mouth size, and coloration, they even live in similar areas usually, but the warmouth will never be as brightly colored as a green sunfish. They tend to be more camo colored than the greenie.

Same website you used for the warmouth Bluebasser86. Notice other names for green sunfish. Perhaps it is not a warmouth, never heard of those until today myself, but to me it is indeed a goggle eye.

Goggle eye is whole different fish. Lots of them in the ozark streams south of me a few hours. They're usually way bigger than green sunfish tend to be.

Like a lot of fish the green sunfish goes by a lot of different names. I'm just going by their true name in an attempt to prevent confusion because they all do look similar and there are lots of places, like around where I'm at, that you could make three casts and catch a green sunfish, goggle eye, and warmouth on consecutive casts. They go by different names depending on regions a lot of the time. A lot of people around here call them perch despite the fact that there are actually very few actual perch to be caught anywhere near here.

our family calls them a kibbie, the kids catch them by the dozens on a small hook and earth worm or just a sunfish. they will poke at just about anything you throw in or on top of the water that is not bigger than them.
